Default Help for a newbie

First, thanks for taking the time to help me. Here is my situation....

I purchased the Panasonic DMP-BD10A a few weeks ago from Circuit City. I took it home and the disc slot would not open. I returned that unit and exchanged it for a different one. The next one I brought home worked but would freeze up every 10 minutes or so playing both of the Pirates discs and the Transporter. When it did work, the picture and sound were incredible. I was pretty upset at this point so I returned the Panasonic and bought the Sony BDP-S300.

My problem is this, I dont think the Sony looks as good. Maybe I am crazy, but the picture quality is not even as crisp as my cable running at 1080i. I have everything running via HDMI through my receiver to my Aquos.

I am actually pretty disapointed in the Sony. I would like to return it and get the Panasonic but I am worried about it freezing up. I have been trying to read up on this forum to find more information and it seems I may have had a Panasonic with old firmware.

Should I return the Sony and get the Panasonic? Or should I wait until newer units come out?

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forums!
Honestly I would recommend a PS3 or any BD player that has internet ability. This is so it can be updated to the latest firmware.
I am not familiar with those models but I am surprised so many would not work properly for you.
Assuming nothing else in the set-up has changed except the player, the image should look the same unless the new drive has old firmware or has the wrong settings.
There might be a way to check to see if there is a setting for the BD player that is not set right.
If not, try Panasonic again, I doubt you will keep running into problems with them.

Thanks for the response. I have spent literally hours looking through the Sony manual but I have found nothing that leads me to believe I have the settings wrong.

The Panasonic did look good when it was working for those 10 minutes. I just checked and it seems Panasonic is coming out with some new models. I may return my Sony and get one of those.

My brother-in-law does have a PS3. I am going to bring that over tonight and check that out.

Thanks again

i started out with the Sony, but returned it for the Samsung BD-P1200...and I'm extremely happy with my choice...It was 100 bucks more, but well worth it...and it has an ethernet port for firmware updates.

Thanks for response. Did you find you had a better picture with the Samsung?

I have the Sony BDP-S300 and the picture is amazing, as crisp and clear as any other bluray player, i'm not sure why you are having so many problems finding one that works, maybe the stock boys at your store are useing them as bowling pins.

Yea, maybe I am just unlucky or just crazy. I dont understand how my high def cable can look better. It really is a noticable difference. My wife can notice a difference!

actually yes. Dont get me wrong, the Sony had a great picture, but the Samsung was just as good if not better. Plus the load times on the Samsung are almost half that of the Sony. And it has an Ethernet port on the back for firmware updates

Default Some advice for you.......

Your first mistake was buying the panasonic and your second mistake was buying the sony. The pioneer player is regarded as the best player on the market, and the perfomance of the player is really remarkably good. That sony is an el cheapo mass market product and can't be compared to an elite pioneer player. My pioneer has been flawless in operation, is beautifully built and has the BEST picture quality on the market. Actually, despite saying all this, the panny is a good player, but since you're unhappy with both panasonic and sony I really think, if possible, go for the pioneer. All those great reviews of the pioneer can't all be wrong!!

Thanks Marlon for your feedback. I am returning the Sony today and I am going to try the Panasonic once again. Which Pioneer Elite do you have, the BDP-94HD?
