There's really no reason to make DVD-only players anymore- Blu-Ray players (which still play DVDs) can be gotten for under $100 now, and nobody makes standard-def TVs either.

This is no surprise, and doesn't mean much. Since Blu players have been around since 2006 & since most people know they are backwards compatible (i.e., they'll play both DVD's & Blu's) I see no point for companies to even make DVD-only players anymore anyway.

In fact, I haven't seen a DVD-only player in stores for years; I already thought they had stopped making these long ago. As was said, you can get a new Blu player for well under $100 these days, so they're definitely not as expensive as they were years back.

In the states you can still find standard dvd players on the shelves at retailers like best buy and target. I'm all for it. Whatever keeps physical media alive we should support.

I keep thinking to myself that DVD is the only thing that's holding blu-ray back on the market. Seriously, if people can't afford 1080p films when they're selling for $5 (or less?), then folks really have more then just a few personal issues.

Death of this format is beyond overdue!

Yes standard-def TVs aren't made anymore...Now this becomes the main obstacle of making DVD.I guess it couln't be overcome

Why DVD?

Cause poor people don't wanna upgrade!

Honestly the media side has been about following what goes on with sales statistics and algerithims, but sometimes if you look at what other types of media were doing (gaming, music, etc) they did plenty enough to force audiences to upgrade with some room for leeway in between. I haven't seen this happen on the DVD-Blu-Ray conversion and now that 4K has been around more then a year, the only thing that's holding people on the worst of options is the fact that DVD players are still being manufactured. Now ending sales of said players will have a way of allowing the conversion to occur, but because streaming is a thing now the worst I fear is people will convert to that instead.

Well the numbers are pretty much sheep anyway. We've seen them kill off the beta format for... well reasons. * shrug
