the Variety review I read seems to rave at the perfect acting job by Rami as Freddie, but they lament the cliched remark of 'paint by numbers' filmmaking style of film itself.

I was kind of surprised to see the RT score for this around 50%. I was expecting an 80-90%..

God no, even without the Singer factor the film is a Brain May sanitised mess

Bryan Singer is a more than capable director who has, may I remind you, directed some of the best movies in the last 20 years. Both X-Men and X2: X-Men United are still the two best comic book movies ever made. Nothing wrong with Singer.

Usual Suspects was awesome, but after that, it all went downhill.

His X-Men movies were great at the time and are still pretty good, but they’ve been surpassed by other movies. He hasn’t actual directed some of the best movies of the last twenty years, Usual Suspects aside. X-Men Apocalypse and Jack and the Giant Slayer were major duds.

There is nothing that surpassed X-Men and X2: X-Men United. Not in terms of comic book movies. They are still the gold standard for their genre. And let's not forget Superman Returns and X-Men: Days of Future Past. He's had his faults, bad-movie wise, but who hasn't. Take a look at Steven Spielberg. Aside from Indiana Jones and Ready Player One he hasn't had a really knocked it out of the park type movie in the last 10 years. He's actually become less interesting in these last 10 years. Competent, but nowhere near what he once was capable of.

Superman Returns wasn’t particularly great either. And sorry, but Logan, The Dark Knight, Watchmen, Infinity War, etc are all better than X-Men.

DOFP is pretty good though.

Spielberg at least makes competent movies, and his previous films are a LOT stronger. Singer’s work in that area is patchy, ranging from excellent to bad. Even in the 90s he had a semi-failure with Apt Pupil. Singer is a director that can do good work if he has the right material, but Spielberg typically does good work all the time, occasionally even great work.

Tintin is superb and imo it's Spielberg firing on all cylinders.

None of the movies mentioned above are better than X-Men. Not even by a long shot. Only two of the movies come close to being as good as X-Men. Infinity War is a joke compared to X-Men. As for Speilberg, he hasn't really made a decent movie in quite a while. Even Ready Player one, which I liked a good bit, is not exactly that amazing. Speilberg hasn't been firing on all cylinders here as of late. It's been a long while since Speilberg was really in top form.

X-men is better than the sum of its parts. It started a revolution.

Superman: The Movie is still the gold standard of superhero films bar none and Chris Reeve (RIP) was and still is the best actor matched to a comic book character.
