It's funny cause I was seeing yesterday that The Road to El Dorado is finally coming to blu-ray, it and Prince Of Egypt should have long since been on Blu-ray here in the states.
Anyhow I said if only they had Joseph King Of Dreams then my favorite Dreamworks films would be complete. So i was happy to see this up for preorder today.
Sadly none of these films will be given the treatment they deserve .
been a while since I last saw this adaptation, but I remember it being quite striking visually. The dream sequences in particular. Imagine it'd look pretty damn good on Blu-ray

For those interested: watching the disc, this is definitely no SD upscale, although the image quality of the blu-ray absolutely depends on the image quality of the source. The 2018 encode is respectable, as good as one could expect; problems lie really with the 18-year-old direct-to-video source.
Although it's clearly not SD overall (hell the "grain" looks surprisingly good, like The Road to El Dorado blu-ray), the early computer animation inevitably involves individual elements/layers that can at times display evident pixelation (the title text at the beginning is ironically the most obvious example), and in some cases in-source banding. In other words the original animation is a very mixed bag, even compared to The Road to El Dorado and The Prince of Egypt, but unlike the latter, this has been presented as well as it could be. Overall the blu-ray image is surprisingly good, within context.
This is absolutely the edition to get if you're a fan on the film, as it's clearly better than DVD (I can't say the same of an HD stream); it also includes an 11 minute Storyboard Presentation with commentary by the two directors.
How does this movie compare to Prince of Egypt? Loved that film but never saw this one.
I watched it once long ago at Evening Church school, and then in 2013 when I bought a DVD 2 pack with The Prince of Egypt. So I watched it before The Prince of Egypt even.
The animation is really, really good for a direct-to-video film. The film overall isn't anything too special from what I remember. But since you love The Prince of Egypt, you should give this at least one watch. If you're too hesitant to buy, rent it first. Or even get a cheap DVD if you can find it.
As this is probably the best place to pose this question, where does JOSEPH lie as far as animation production goes? I am trying to sort out Dreamworks animation, and unlike Walt Disney where things are sorted out nicely, Dreamworks's catalog is culled from different studios.
You have some made in Glendale, which I assume is the main studio. Others in the past were made by DPI and others by Aardman, but released under Dreamworks. Trying to draw parallels, does this make sense?

So the primary animation studio for Dreamworks is that of Glendale and the others are made elsewhere and just financed/produced under the encompassing Dreamworks banner?
So where does JOSEPH then lie? It is DTV. Was it made by the Glendale studio and thus belong there (similar to WDAS making 'Mickey's Christmas Carol') or was it from a different branch similar to Disney and DisneyToon studios with the sequels?, just receiving creative advice and some help from cast of the main films from Glendale?

Development for Joseph started while The Prince of Egypt was being made, so the same crew worked on both films, and the wide group of ministers served on both projects as consultants. Work on the animated movie was based in Los Angeles and Canada, and nearly 500 artists contributed to the project."
To make this inaugural project, DreamWorks employed artists who had worked for Walt Disney Feature Animation and the recently disbanded Amblimation, totaling a crew of 350 people from 34 different nations. The film has a blend of traditional animation and computer-generated imagery, created using software from Toon Boom Animation and Silicon Graphics.

Yes. This other Wikipedia article makes clear that Prince of Egypt was DWA Glendale. So joining the dots means that Joseph was DWA Glendale + somewhere in Canada.
This is one of my favorite movies that I have owned on the DVD format since November 7th 2000. I was not aware that this movie ended up getting a Blu-ray release on January 22nd 2019. Awesome. Now I will soon have both Joseph: King of Dreams on Blu-ray to join my Prince of Egypt on Blu-ray.
