Glad this did well enough to warrant a HD release and will be upgrading. However can't help wishing Simply Media had had the guts to do this on blu-ray to begin with. Part of me thinks something fishy is going on, perhaps planned DVD obsolescence on their part? Bollocks to it, pre-ordered the moment it turns up on HMV or Zoom. "Includes the world premiere of the director-approved widescreen edition", probably a one watch curiosity but done well it might look mostly presentable. |

The remastered DVD they put out earlier this year was from a new exclusive 2K master. At the time I was puzzled as too why they didn't also release a blu-ray. They must have known their was demand for this in HD.

Pretty crafty move on their part. I'm glad it's coming out... though having said that, a film like this is might be enhanced by a transfer that isn't necessarily the greatest, like the older DVD, which looked like a VHS-rip.
Did anyone check out the Severin release? |

The original Simply Media DVD was taken from the same master used for the 1980's BBC VHS! To be honest it's probably easier on the eyes than the Severin blu-ray. If I remember rightly the only differences regarding the bonus material is that the current USA and UK versions is that they contain different trailers and the UK edition has a second commentary track. EDIT: The UK DVD also contains an exclusive pdf file of press cuttings. Other than the slight lack of detail in comparison to the blu-ray the Simply Media re-mastered DVD is superior in every way. Apparently they wanted to release the blu-ray concurrently with the DVD but the BBC wanted too much money. This sounds like utter bullshit to me but as it's the vile BBC we're talking about who knows? Last edited by Fnord Prefect; 11-05-2018 at 07:14 PM. |

It's cheeky any way you slice it, but maybe the sales performance of the remastered DVD finally convinced someone somewhere to take a punt on the Blu-ray. Gonna grab it on day 1 but I'm not selling the DVD yet, just in case like.

Seems like the Beeb could care less about their output unless someone else (private company or otherwise) is footing the bill... unless it's Doctor ****ing Who! Money is of no concern to them at that point.

I hope it's 1080i/50, so it can be presented at the original 25fps and not slowed down to 24fps like the US BD.
The wording "includes the world premiere of the director-approved widescreen edition" makes me VERY nervous. I sincerely hope Simply Media is including BOTH the original 4:3 version and also this newly cropped version, regardless of whether the director approved it. I have to hope the 2 BDs described in the listing are for the two different versions, but I have a horrible feeling we may get ONLY the cropped version, as with the BD of Prime Suspect and the first BD of World at War. If this is only the cropped version, it is NO SALE for me. Last edited by James Luckard; 11-04-2018 at 07:46 AM. |

I bought the Region A Severin Films BD, which is a pretty poor presentation. Held off buying the Simply Media DVD in the hope of an eventual BD upgrade. Glad I did, although, if this new BD is presented only in a cropped aspect ratio, then I may have to pass.

If the HD transfer was struck from a film print than why should it be in 1080i/25 fps? That would only make sense if the source material was scanned in that mode (and why should anyone do this nowadays?) or if it was shot on video with 25 fps to begin with.
And even if the scan was done in 1080i/25pfs it is not so difficilt to propperly convert it into 1080p/24 fps. The only thing they must not forget then is to correct the sound pitch accordingly. Could anyone please explain to me why all of you so eagerly insist that this must be in 1080i/25fps? Last edited by The Mole; 11-04-2018 at 09:05 AM. |
