I search this matter a long time but until now I don't have any clear answer.
So it's known a 50GB BD-R on Windows has clear size 45,1GB.It's possible to write a BD-R bigger than this size (45,1GB) ? Or it will be a waste recording ? |

If you can write more than 45GB to a BD50, you risk compatibility issues with certain drives and players. That’s why you almost never see a “real” Blu-ray with more than 43-44 gigs on it.
DVD9s only hold 8.5GB and you never saw them with more than 7.5 gigs on them either. |

It's a fact that there's a safe zone and that it's better to not go beyond it. I've also had quite a lot of discs (mainly anime ones) in my Blu-ray drive over the years, and I don't recall seeing one go past 45 gigs. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but you risk compatibility issues if you do.

I use a couple of different programs for burning bd-r discs and both programs limit what I can actually burn to slightly less than what the disc claims. On a 25 gb single layer disc, I can only use approx. 23.3 gb as labelled by Windows and the burning ROMs that I use.
See this chart: BD-R Single layer 25GB (23.3GiB) BD-R Dual layer 50GB (46.6GiB) BD-RE Single layer REwriteable 25 GB (23.3GiB) BD-RE Dual layer REwriteable 50GB (46.6GiB) BD-XL Triple layer 100GB (93.1GiB) BD-XL Quadruple layer 128GB (119.2GiB) "GiB = GigaBytes in computer world where 1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes" https://www.videohelp.com/hd One person explained the discrepancy this way: "Media manufacturers rate the capacity in GB (1000 * 1000 * 1000). Windows [and all operating systems] reports file sizes in GiB (1024 * 1024 * 1024), though they don't use the GiB nomenclature. So when Windows shows a file is 25 GB the file is actually 26,843,545,600 (25 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024) bytes, 26.8 GB by the disc manufacture's way of counting." Using that formula in reverse, the Mach Go Go disc 1 example referenced in post #4 equates to 46 GB as the disc manufacturer would reckon it. 49,384,144,896 bytes/ 1024/1024/1024= 46 GB or in an equivalent expression: 49,384,144,896 bytes/ 1,073,741,824= 46 GB https://www.google.com/search?q=gib+...w=1600&bih=805 GiB vs. GB: "GB (Gigabyte) and GiB (Gibibyte) are two different digital data storage scales defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). In short - GiB is base 2, GB is base 10. GiB = 2 to the 30th power (1,073,741,824) bytes (base 2) GB = 10 to the 9th power (1,000,000,000) bytes (base 10)" https://support.red.com/hc/en-us/art...een-GB-and-GiB Last edited by Vilya; 11-04-2018 at 02:55 PM. |

Thanks all for your answers.
The Bluray Valkyrie for example it's 46,4GB. So it's safe to create a backup with Nero ? |

46.4 GiB equals 49.82 GB, so you should be fine. 46.6 GiB equals 50 GB, the stated capacity of a dual layer bd-r, as per the chart and the conversion calculator given previously. As an approximate guideline, when a computer program gives you a file size it is in GiB despite being labelled as GB. Computers use base 2. Take the stated file size and multiply it by 1.074 to convert it to actual GB which is how blank bd-r disc media is measured (base 10). 1 gibibyte (GiB) = 1.07374 gigabyte (GB) Last edited by Vilya; 11-04-2018 at 03:52 PM. |
