The book was actually really good, I thought, and in Jackson's hands, I'm optimistic he can bring out the best parts of it. The world building was great, it was filled with rich, colorful characters, and it wasn't afraid to take risks. I'm hoping they don't lean too heavily on the teen romance in order to attract an audience. It was a fairly small (albeit somewhat important) part of the novel, but nothing major. I'd put the book somewhere between young adult and adult fiction. It's clear they're trying to keep Hester (the main girl) somewhat attractive, while in the book, she's described many times as quite ugly and horrifically scarred. That's part of what I really liked about her- she's not the typical damsel- she's actually quite cold, capable, vindictive to the point of being suicidal, and far from any semblance of beauty. I haven't gotten around to the other books yet, but at least in part 1, she's a great character.
I get that the premise is a little strange, but I hope people give it a chance. We complain that there's no new ideas in Hollywood, and while this is technically based off a book and not wholly "original", it's at least something not many can say they've seen portrayed on screen before. We need more original ideas like this. I'm not saying it won't end up sucking, I just hope it doesn't. |

It's interesting to see so many people interested in what's essentially a YA adaptation with a bigger budget, simply because it's coming from Peter Jackson.
It's also pretty sad, and sadly predictable that the lead character is nowhere near as disfigured, and scarred as the book. It plays a role in the story and character, but of course Hollywood has to pretty up their actresses for fear that an ugly lead will lead to an ugly box office. Even if the movie wasn't highly flawed on it's own, the only thing that made Cara Delevigne's performance even tolerable was comparing it to Dane DeHaan's lifeless efforts. Woof he was awful, I felt like I was being punished watching the two of them together. |
