I don't think you can really spoil this one. It's exactly what it looks like.

I thought it was fine. Not good, not bad, just fine. It has the same look and feel of every big Sony studio horror movie, so it's pretty much interchangeable with Slender Man or those Sam Raimi Ghost House Pictures movies. The other big comparison is obviously The Autopsy Of Jane Doe, which is a much better movie than this one.

Most of the movie is just Shay Mitchell wandering the building and every so often there's a jump scare or you can catch something lurking in the background. The plot is pretty straight-forward, so there's really nothing in the way of twists or surprises. This is an extremely quiet movie, lots of long stretches of silence. Fortunately there was only one other person in the theater with me, but if you're in the theater with a bunch of couples talking or crinkling candy wrappers, this could be a pretty miserable theater experience.

So, yeah, I thought it was totally harmless, but forgettable. I will say that Nick Thune is really the only actor that brings much life to the movie, I couldn't help but think this would be a better movie with him in the lead role as the morgue employee. Or at least give him a bigger role, he's certainly more interesting than the generic cop ex-boyfriend.

I had fun, and I especially appreciated the brisk 85 minute running time, but I can't say I'd recommend this to anyone paying full ticket prices. If you have a subscription service like A-List or MoviePass, go for it, otherwise I'd say wait for the Starz premiere. This weekend and next weekend are pretty much dead weekends, so if you do have A-List, this is really your only option anyway.

Yep, that's when I'll watch it lol I'm backlogged on films and this is literally on the bottom of the list of things I want to see theatrically. I got free tickets to see Venom and Girl in the Spiders Web, so I paid the $6 out of pocket to just buy a ticket to this since I want those digital copies.

Ah, I see. I was going to see this last night but decided to see The Front Runner instead since that was going to be reduced to single showtimes after 10pm.

This is not a great film by any stretch of the imagination, but I believe it deserves a modest amount of credit and praise. After a hyper-clichéd opening sequence—a young woman, writhing, tied to a bedpost; priests reciting the exorcism rites; a frightened father imploring his daughter to "fight" the demon inside (only for a masculine, demonic voice to insist she belongs to him now)—it mostly avoids going through the most expected motions of this sub-genre. It is pleasantly low on po-faced religiosity, and there are no further William Friedkin-lite exorcism sequences.

If one can live with the absurdity of a hospital in downtown Boston having around five or six people in it at night (and super-unhelpful motion-sensor lighting), the morgue setting is fairly novel and claustrophobic. Between the obligatory loud-orchestral-cue jolts, Dutch director Diederik Van Rooijen executes a few effective, eerie moments inviting our eyes to search the corner of the frame for a movement, a shadow. The title antagonist is a suitably gory, creepy-crawly presence in the vein of The Ring's Samara.

Shay Mitchell is a capable lead; her character (flawed, but resourceful and tough) is more compelling than expected for a protagonist in this type of film. Comedian and songwriter Nick Thune is charismatic in his too-few scenes as an amiably eccentric ambulance driver.

Without being particularly successful, the film attempts a Babadookesque subtext connecting demonic possession with anxiety, depression, and addiction:

[Show spoiler]the hardest step of AA: burning a demon (and YOUR DEMONS!) in a computer-generated incinerator.

It is a bit too much of a mainstream, ambiguity-averse blunt-force instrument for this type of symbolism to blossom, but the attempt itself feels worthy of notice.

I've given my detailed thoughts about it at the Front Runner threat but to make a long story short, it's well made, engaging to watch at times with great acting all around but it's not enough for me to recommend this in good conscious.

Finally went tonight. It was a decent movie. Attractive cast, typical scares. Short runtime. I didn't feel like it dragged like some users here. About 10 of us in the theatre (all late teens/early 20's) and we were all quiet and nobody had their phones out.

It did remind me a lot of Lazarus Effect though.
