listing movies from the past few years and/or big studio releases defeats the purpose of even having these lists.

It's been a very busy and difficult year, and that reflected on the films I've watched: they have been less than usual and mostly for distraction.

Usually I try to discover a new to me actor/director and focus on his filmography, and this year it was just Terry Gilliam and Carole Lombard (btw she became my favorite actress). Plus the Chaplin Essanay comedies!

All of the non-English films I've listed that have dialogue should be available with English subtitles one way or another.

Sometimes it can be a pain to find subtitles, but most of the time even the most obscure older foreign VHS-ripped film will have an English subtitle file in some corner of the internet. If there are no subtitles available, I'll watch the film without them if it's in a language I can understand.

Nice list idea, gives a more accurate, individualized reflection of what people have been watching this year, especially for those like me who don't go to the theatre much.

For me, about half my viewing has been catchup on 2017 and recent stuff, and half, somewhat older films. So I've split my list into two to reflect that.

I haven't been watching as much really old stuff as I would have a few years ago; lately I've been more into... John Waters, and Shaw Brothers, real cult type stuff... but even most of that I watched last year. I really haven't had much time for movies this year, except a couple pockets of time in March, September, and this month. I've only watched about 100 films total this year, so my list won't be as big and diverse as some in this thread...

Recent Films:
  1. Tokyo Vampire Hotel (2017 Mini-Series)
  2. The Shape of Water (2017)
  3. Antiporno (2017)
  4. Mandy (2018)
  5. The Disaster Artist (2017)
  6. Memoir of a Murderer (2017)
  7. The Sion Sono (2016)
  8. Killing (2018)
  9. Lucky (2017)
  10. Oh Lucy! (2018)

Older First-Time Viewings:
  1. Mind Game (2004)
  2. Barefoot Gen 2 (1986)
  3. Hiruko the Goblin (1991)
  4. Valley Girl (1983)
  5. Attack the Gas Station! (1999)
  6. A Thousand and One Nights (1969)
  7. Desperate Living (1977)
  8. Seeding of a Ghost (1983)
  9. Police Story (1985)
  10. Dogville (2003)

One notable first viewing for me in 2018 was Dial Code Santa Claus.
This was one movie I never even heard of but caught my interest when I read what it was all about and it was such a fun and bizarre flick that will go into my holiday movie cycle when the Blu-ray drops.
The other would be They Shall Not Grow Old. One of the films that genuinely had a strong impact on me.

What I mean is that some films are available on VHS/DVD/Blu-ray, some only through theatrical screening, and some are only available through streaming to take some examples. Some films simply don't have a psychical release. Some will maybe not even get one in the nearest future or get one at all. And then you have some films that only float around as private/illegal/free/rare copies on the net etc. Then you have the whole thing with subtitles to add into the mix.

What I'm talking about above goes for films in general, or the more obscure, older and non-English ones. I already talked about the availability of the ones in my list, but if there's any specific ones that you are struggling to find on DVD or anything, feel free to message me or ask me here directly and I will try to help you as much as I can.
