Yep. The older we get, the more our perception of time changes. And I agree, for me 10 years is nothing these days.

The Crow is definitely one of the best films ever made. When you strip away the violence and darkness, it boils down to a love story that conquers death. That's such a common theme, because we all want to trust that a love exists in the world, that continues for us even when our natural life doesn't. Its very sad that Brandon died during filming; I think he'd have loved to see how appreciative fans have been over the years. Sadly, the sequels pretty much suck, though I liked Eric Mabius' performance in Salvation.

I had a disquieting moment when I showed Beetlejuice to my then-teenage nephew in 2017, and when he recognized Winona Ryder as "The Mom from Stranger Things" and sat there marveling, "She's SO young...!", it made me feel a million years old.

Watching this film made me question; "What has changed? What has the last decade been about?" The rise of the smartphone? Even that was rolling out in the previous decade. The music still sounded modern, the clothes were no different from what I see on the street these days, the actors were still relevant and the effects held up.

Maybe I'm getting old and not noticing trends as much anymore, but I still feel nothing has changed much in the past decade or more.
Its a combination of both. Changes in filmmaking styles, fashion, hair styles from the 70s to 80s then from 80s to 90s, then 90s to 00s are vast. But from 2010-2019 it looks like all the same shit. Digital films age a little better because everything looks pretty sterile too. Technology while still advancing is providing diminishing returns with phones, cameras, tvs etc. Modern CGI effects in marvel movies often look ten years old or even older to me, it looks like a cartoon. I think the internet makes the world a smaller place too so were not seeing these massive changes from decade to decade in american culture anyway. Its the same with other art forms as well like gaming. A game from 2011 can still feel pretty impressive and look great, playing a game that was ten years old in 1997 was like seeing something from a different planet.

True. Up until the mid to late 90's you could easily guess what decade a film took place just by the look of the cars they were driving. Today they don't look much different than they did 20 years ago.

This is very subjective. Classic movies for me are the ones made before i was born.

That being said, there are fewer and fewer films being released every year that feel as though they are deserving of “classic” status.
If that criteria was used to determine a classic film, Exit to Eden would be considered a classic.

And she used to be younger than that!

I can't even remember the last time I was prompted to say, "look how young they were then."

This reminds me how great movies were in the mid-90s, I'd consider most of them classics as well.

Nobody's Fool (Still a no show on BD)

1994 is probably the year I saw the highest percentage of released movies. I gather that more films have been released since 1994 than had ever been released prior to that year.

Interesting thread, this 'classic' bit has several elements as others have pointed out.

'Classic' can be used with regards to / to describe f.ex.

- old movies (often pre-1970)
- very famous movies
- 'exceptional movies' [objectively (a consensus within the critical reviewer's community) or subjectively (what you yourself define a 'classic' movie)].

Myself I use the term in all the above cases, but mostly to do with very famous movies (f.ex. "Gone With the Wind" and "Casablanca") and exceptional movies, 'masterpieces' (objectively f.ex. "Citizen Cane" and "Raging Bull", subjectively f.ex "Braveheart" and "Gladiator").

My impression from my mates, who are less into movies than I am but who enjoy a film now and then, is that many use the term 'classic' to describe a movie they love themselves, regardless of critical reception, but this can of course vary.

Let's face it. Most of the films being released today are not only NOT "classic," they are not worth a trip to the theatre and admission.
