Default Malèna (uncut)

Would anyone else welcome a belated Blu-ray of this beautiful, funny, tragic, wistful Italian coming-of-age story? Uncut, of course, unlike the British Blu-ray or the American DVD, which mutilated over 15% of the original running time.

The Korean release is English friendly, and uncut.

I own the Korean DVD. Nicely-presented edition of the uncut version of this beautiful film.

Art should never be censored, and this film is pure art.

I have the Korean release, highly recommended.

Yeah, I suppose people who want it will have to make do with the Korean release.

According to IMDb, Miramax still owns it in the USA. It doesn't bode well for an uncensored release anytime soon.

No, countries like the US and the UK got an edited version, as if often the case with European films containing taboo themes or those that are sexually explicit eg Sexual Chronicles of a French Family.

Just ordered it. What is the difference between 'Plain Edition' & 'Plain Edition 2'?

Just watched it last night and WOW European movies are different.

US/UK can't seem to handle these movies in public due to majority of people conditioned to scream indecency in public while being no different in private. Korea is even more conservative (on the surface) so I am delightfully surprised that this Korean release exists.

Monica Belucci looked great in Matrix and Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992?) but they are nothing like Malena.

I don't think this is necessarily true of the general public at large in the UK, seems politicians and newspapers have more of an issue.

Malena on the other hand has the issue of a minor having sex with an adult (even though it's in a dream). Which is a completely different kettle of fish.

Right! I think you are correct in stating it is not true of the general public in UK.

I've been pondering over the general theme of the movie other than what is obvious on the surface. IMO, it seems that Malena's story bears striking resemblance to Jesus with townsfolk as us, humans, the sinners. They gossip, covet, and sin while Malena is simply walking through the streets; on her way to her father's residence to provide care. She is punished for the sins the townsfolk has committed (through physical violence), disappears for a while, then comes back then loved by the same people. The religious connection is clearly demonstrated in the movie where Malena is paraded through the streets as if Malena was statue of Mary, mother of Jesus.

As an alternate interpretation, attached link explores Malena's parallel to Mary Magdalene, whose nature has long been disputed.
https://biblefilms.blogspot.com/2016...magdalena.html
As the link explains, Bellucci also appears in The Passion of Christ 4 years later. If all this is a coincidence, it is a striking one.

Malena's husband returning to redeem Malena's reputation, i.e. as Jesus, is palpable but he simply is not shown in the movie as a Jesus-like character. It is purely my opinion that Malena as Jesus is a stronger case. This, I think, would be much more controversial topic than anything else in the movie.

Anyways, I wanted to see if there was a deeper message in the movie and it seems there is. As usual, my first watch was taking in all the visuals and the narrative. Now I've got to watch it 2nd time from a new perspective.
