Well if that's the case, I find it really convenient that the Goku is white and the rest of the cast is Asian.
In a martial arts film based on a Japanese comic, it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to cut the Eastern influence entirely. Goku can be reasoned into being white, but the same cannot be said for the rest of the cast. I personally think they nailed the balance perfectly: Goku and Bulma being more "American" and the likes of Chichi, Roshi, and Yamcha being Asian.

You're argument would hold water if this wasn't originally a manga. That's like me saying that Superman is an alien therefore his race is open to interpetation so he could be played by an Asian when it's pretty damn certain that Superman is and will always be portrayed as a white person.
The difference here is that Superman comics were made in America and the films were made in America. If Superman comics were being adapted in Japan, would you really expect them to hold true to the "Superman looks like a typical White American" ideal?

As for Chow Yun Fat playing the Joker, trying selling that to the Batman fanboys.
Not the best example, because playing the Joker would not play to this person's forte, but just look at how Ledger took it. No one thought he'd be any good, but he took it places they never expected. If an Asian actor did the same, it wouldn't matter his race.

I was saying that because in the English versions of these things, Goku is not heavily differentiated from the rest of the cast like he is in the Japanese material. He regularly uses English phrases when Japanese would be more appropriate. For example, the last thing he says before teleporting Cell away toward the end of the Cell Games is "bye bye". Not "sayonara" or any number of other Japanese phrases that would be appropriate (and that he has used multiple times before). "bye bye". Tell me that's not a Western-ly thing to do.

The setting was never identified but referred to as "Dragonworld", an alternate place resembling ancient China, except for said dinosaurs, talking animals, Capsule technology, and six or seven moons in the sky at any given time...
There are never that many moons... I think there was one instance of the moon being destroyed, only to appear again later on for no reason, but that's easily explained as a plot hole, not the idea that this alternate reality planet had multiple moons.

Quote:
Later referred to as "Earth" in later dubs, but the movie settles for an alternate Earth that was catastrophically re-geographized after the LAST epic battle years ago (or at least, that's the explanation in earlier script drafts, hence the last-minute "Evolution" title)--
And no direct mention of Capsule Co. either, but the movie-Bulma does get a cool transforming bike in the trailer.
I'd say with confidence that Capsule Corp. will be identified clearly, or is planned to be in a sequel. After all, when Goku first met Bulma, he had no idea she was involved in all that jazz.

Yeah, it's just like Blade Trinity. What a terrible movie. Ever since then... I can't even enjoy Blade comics... hmm... still not right.

Yeah, it's just like The Punisher. That stupid movie didn't even have the skull in it! I can't even read Punisher comics anymore without associating it with this CRAPPY MOVIE.

Oh. That's right. Terrible film adaptations DO NOT ERASE THE GOODNESS of the things they're based on.

Yea, I know right? We should totally do that thing where Goten and Trunks would fuse together and become GoTenks. I know the dance by heart and I'm pretty sure I can get it to work with you. If you're a "real fan" like you claim to be, you should know the dance also.

We can be called BeefyBurst or something. Then we can use our combined energy which is probably going to be like a bajillion points and kick the hell out of Prankster and the rest of these guys who are bashing this movie! Yea! You in? I even have some sensu beans we can chow down on in case we need the extra boost. .... Ok, I lied. They are really just a bunch of lima beans but hey, mind over matter, right?

Yet another case of a crossover with an arguably sufficent amount of potential to be a good movie that had it's original story 'tweaked' (not to my liking, nor many of the fans) and will probably stall at the box-office. Why is this done? The film studio fails and the fans are upset, it makes no sense. Though You can't always blame 20th Century Fox, they're just the ones paying the costs. The real questions need to go to the writing staff and producers.

wow.. had me worried for a moment. I thought you were trash talking speed racer It was a good movie, except for some odd reason it was released with average audio. Besides that it was a fun popcorn flick! lol

Back on topic... I am not counting on DBZ to be a blockbuster this year

thats too much i mean I know of some of the changes they made like Krillin is not Krillin at all. I even heard that Goku would be in school. How in the hell did they come up with that idea? Goku never ever went to school and that was basically what Chichi decided that Gohan would be smart not a fighter. Goku trained in jungles and played with animals, and ate food off of trees or got fish barehanded. Then goes in search of the Dragonballs with Bulma, Yamcha, and Oolong, then Goku trains under Master Roshi. After that he fights in the World Martial Arts Tournament, then beats up the Red Ribbon Army, then onto King Piccolo and Piccolo Jr. Goku never even had time to go to school. Plus Goku's hair looks weird and short its supposed to be long and also the Kahmehamea Wave is done all wrong.

A decade or more we've been waiting for the always-talked-about-but-never-came live action Dragonball film and this is what we get? Tom Cruise's annoying son from War of the Worlds playing Goku? Goku saying he "can't do this"? Chow Yun Fat as Master Roshi? Not to mention Goku and Bulma are American...

Yeah and plus Master Roshi with hair? Master Roshi has been bald throughout the whole freaking series
[Show spoiler] except when he fought against Goku under the disguise as Jackie Chun at Goku's 1st World Martial Arts Tournament.

And if you were too pop-culture deficient to do your homework before screening and the cool-quotient zoomed over your lil' gamer head, Don't Run Crying To Us Smart People.

The same applies to Dragonball (either series), and while this doesn't look perfect, I've seen a dozen ways in which it Could've Been Worse(tm).
My wife never saw the Avengers or every really watched Speed Racer but thought both were entertaining.

Poor Speed Racer got poor press and a worse time to release. It was kinda like a Spy Kids flick with a bit broader appeal. I've seen a whole heck of a lot worse.

On the other hand, she's seen DBZ with me so she is familiar with it, and loves Chow and Jackie Chan and kung-fu flicks - but I have a sinking feeling we'll rent in on BD and and the end she's going to say "that was utter crap".

I hope it does well, but not holding my breath.

I think I already explained this MANY times, but Goku and Bulma being American actually makes plenty of sense if you're intimately familiar with the source material. Bulma's race is never explicitly named and is VASTLY more Western than most of the other characters. Goku's race is defined as "alien", and he too is given more than a few Western characteristics.

It's not like Goku and Bulma were defined as Japanese in the source material and they "changed" the races just to be racist bastards. Them being American makes perfect sense for an AMERICAN adaptation of the material.

Yeah, that's the stupid thing. Chow Yun Fat does bald well, too. I can understand them going with something a little different for the facial hair, and I am also understanding of them dropping the cheesy sunglasses.

But the man does bald well. Couldn't they have made him bald and gave him a goatee or something?
