Japan Great Expectations - Cuaron (1998)

Fox is releasing Cuaron's GREAT EXPECTATIONS in Japan on 2/8/19:

https://www.amazon.co.jp/Great-Expec.../dp/B07K14LZWW

It's pretty steep, costing $44, plus shipping, which will be pricey too.

I'll probably pick it up, because it's the only BD in the world and I'm a Cuaron completist. This title only has a US DVD that's an appalling old 4:3 letterboxed laserdisc transfer and an anamorphic DVD from Brazil that I never bought.

It's part of a wave of Fox titles being released in Japan. The fact that there's an HD master, and that Cuaron seems about to win yet more Oscars for ROMA, means it's conceivable this will be released elsewhere, but honestly I wouldn't hold my breath.

I'm shocked Kino Lorber or Twilight Time haven't already picked this up, a TT release with an isolated Patrick Doyle score would have been amazing.

I think I'll wait to see if Cuaron/Roma win any big Oscars, if they do, I may wait a couple of months to see if this gets a release in any other country where BDs and shipping are cheaper.

Sorry for rising this thread from the dead, but I'm surprised that no one mentioned here that Alfonso said this about the film in 2016:

"Cuarón: “Do we have to talk about ‘Great Expectations’? If we must, let’s go for it.”

Simon: “It’s interesting that it takes place in the modern world. How did you decide to change the time and world of this book?”

Cuarón: “That’s part of the problem: I didn’t accomplish it. It was a project that was offered and I allowed myself to be seduced for the wrong reasons. I was at a point when I was running out of money. I was feeling insecure and was convinced by the studios to do it. I said no three times to ‘Great Expectations,’ but I thought I could compensate with visuals. Never. When there is no concept, no soul in the script, you can’t compensate with anything.”

When the sequence from “Great Expectations” was shown, which was a technically marvelous tracking shot following Ethan Hawke, Simon praised its brilliance.

Cuaron: “That’s all Chivo! I wish that was the whole film! I look at it as an experience, and I feel embarrassed about it, but I’m still grateful for this film. Without it, I wouldn’t have done my next film.”

Needless to say, he's no fan of the film, so a new transfer seems unlikely.

Really wish Fox/Disney would license this out to Kino or someone, just so we could finally get a domestic bluray release for it. I know it doesnt have alot of fans but I really enjoy it. and have some great memories of it.

This is getting a priced-down reissue from Disney Japan on September 16th, 2022. These releases tend to have two listings on Amazon, one standard retail and one Amazon only, with Amazon often selling only their edition. The discs should be identical to each other and the first edition (minus the slipcover):

https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B0B67L5BG7/ (standard retail)

https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B0B67MDKXZ/ (Amazon only)

The price of the Amazon version is ¥1,500 (tax included) and may go down further before release.

Really love this movie and I was going to order the original Japan BD w/nice slipcover but for whatever reason just kinda forgot about ordering it and it went OOP. Glad it's getting a rerelease will definitely remember ordering it this time except my punishment for forgetting to order it the first time is no nice slipcover.

That shipping is killer though. We should do a group buy.

I really like this film too if anyone's serious about a groupbuy.

Any reason to believe this will ever get another physical release let alone a 4k UHD? I noticed Amazon US sells this in the Amazon Japan storefront for only $20 shipped

I like this film. Cuarón seems to want to appease critics. I'd rather watch this again than Roma.

Considering how badly he's spoken about the film, no chance in hell
