Arrow Dark Crystal 2 in 2011?

From Den of Geek:

Quote:
We must have missed the original announcement of this, and shame on us for doing so. It’s fair to say that among the writers of Den Of Geek, there are a couple of people who are really rather fanatical about their love of all things Henson, and 80s movies Dark Crystal and Labyrinth are right up there with The Muppets.

Well, apparently, there are plans afoot to make a second Dark Crystal movie, and have been since 2005. Entitled The Power Of The Dark Crystal, the new film now has a freshly rewritten screenplay courtesy of Moulin Rouge scribe Craig Pearce, and according to Muppet News Flash (great site, by the way), the Henson company has taken on a production partner with the intention of getting the film out there for 2011.
Anyone excited at the possibility of a revisit to The Dark Crystal?

Oh, so not "The Power of the Dark Crystal", which ran out of money a couple years ago?

(Yeah, it wasn't funnier. That 'cause it's fact. Or was, anyway.)

I must see the original Dark Crystal first, cause yeah it's my secret shame that I have not. At least so far.

Anyways this new DC, is it CGI like Pixar stuff or Muppet like, hmm muppet stuff ?

It's puppetry-modeled CGI, seeing as Brian Henson pretty much gave up on "pure" puppetry back in the early 00's (qv. "Sid the Science Kid").

Update!

"Omnilab Media and The Jim Henson Company are teaming to produce the ambitious fantasy epic "Power of the Dark Crystal"

A sequel to the 1982 classic "The Dark Crystal", the story is set centuries later when the world has once again fallen into darkness and a mysterious girl made of fire teams with a Gelfling outcast to steal a shard of the legendary Crystal in an attempt to reignite the dying sun that exists at the center of the planet.

To be shot in stereoscopic 3D, the project will be a fusion of live action and traditional puppetry combined with visual and special effects. Legendary fantasy artist Brian Froud will reprise his role as conceptual designer of the film while complex CGI elements will be handled by VFX company Iloura ("Where the Wild Things Are," "The Pacific").

Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig ("Daybreakers," "Undead") will direct from a script by Craig Pearce ("Moulin Rouge!," "Strictly Ballroom") based on a story by Annette Duffy. Filming kicks off later this year for release in 2011."

lol It use to creep me out when I was younger, but it's such a wonderful kid's fantasy film unlike most of the turds that are plopped-out today.

No Jim Henson, No Sale.

While Mirrormask was an interesting attempt to capture the feel of the previous Jim Henson productions it was ultimately a failure.

The only director worthy of making this sequel is Del Toro.

Just be glad we don't have Genndy Tartakovsky on it anymore--

Remember way back when everyone (including Lucas) thought he would be the Next Big Thing, if only he had the chance to go mainstream?

I don't see the need for a sequel, even more so to the fact that it look's and sound like the exact same story but a few century later. Sound's more to me like a vain attempt at a remake without calling it a remake in order to cash in on the new 3D and CGI phase. It's too bad

I think the working title for this is:

The Dark Crystal 2: Using Franchise Recognition to Cash in on 3D

It was the lack of technology that made the original great. It was just puppets and guys in suits, and it looked great. No need for CGI/3D.

No, it IS some actual attempt at a sequel--
And while it follows a complete spinoff character, we do get a cameo showing that Jen & Kira eventually became king and queen of the planet...The abovementioned few hundred years later.
(And if they're still going with the early production art, children-of-the-80's should get used to the major mind-trauma of seeing Kira in senior-citizen GILF-ling mode. )

Actually, as noted of Disney's troubles with the project earlier, it's "Using 3D to Rescue/Cash In On Bankrupt* Franchise Recognition".

Billy Crystal is apparently tired of sharing the animated spotlight with his Monsters, Inc. co-stars and has found a cartoon franchise to call his own. Variety is reporting that Crystal will co-write, co-produce and star in an adaptation of author Eva Ibbotson's 1979 kid lit classic Which Witch? for The Jim Henson Co.

Crystal will likely play the lead role of a dark wizard named Arriman the Awful, master of smighting and blighting, who seeks a wife from the town of Todcaster's seven witches by holding a contest to see which can perform the blackest act of magic. A white witch named Belladonna, who secretly loves Arriman but cannot perform black magic, uses an orphan named Terrence Mugg and his pet worm to conjure a dark spell to win the wizard's heart.

Brian Henson will direct the picture and produce alongside his sister Lisa Henson as well as Samantha Sprecher and Crystal, who co-wrote the picture with Michael Feldman. The City Slickers comedian and frequent Oscar host will be heavily involved with production, which is expected to last at least two years.

"When Brian Henson called me about it, I didn’t know the book," Crystal said. "But it’s a fantastic story, and I brought in a wonderful writer, Michael Feldman, and we’ve written a terrific and inventive script. I’ll play a character as well, which will be great fun because he actually has two eyes."

Variety also mentions a slate of revival titles from late founder Jim Henson's legacy, including movies of Fraggle Rock, Emmet Otter, a sequel to 1982's The Dark Crystal and, most surprisingly, a sequel to 1986's Labyrinth. The latter, Jim Henson's final feature before his death in 1990, was a musical fantasy starring David Bowie that was box office flop but has endured as a cult classic
