![]() ![]() Given the fact that threads for specific upcoming foreign-language movies rarely receive multiple replies here, I thought it'd be a good idea to create a general one for those who might wish to discuss them, post news, trailers and so on. IONCINEMA has compiled a list of 150 promising foreign movies (including English-language ones) that might be released this year. It's a good starting point, since it's more difficult to be aware of upcoming arthouse/independent/foreign-language productions than of much-publicized Hollywood blockbusters. We'd have to ask a mod about that. I'm afraid such a subforum still wouldn't see much activity, but at least the threads for foreign-language movies wouldn't get lost in the shuffle so quickly.

DVD, Blu-ray, torre-- I mean, streaming are the only viable options for me - which means it can take a while. I'll probably only be able to watch most of the movies on my own Most Anticipated list in 2020. |

My contribution would be small too, since I've always focused on Hollywood, and only recently I'm discovering asian cinema. |

Radegund is my most anticpated film of 2019 period. That is of course if Malick actually puts it out this year.

From the list in the link, I'm looking forward to new stuff with Albert Serra, Lav Diaz, Pedro Costa, Philippe Garrel, Roy Andersson and Matías Piñeiro. Will watch the upcoming film from the Dardenne brothers and some others listed.
Other than that, Gianfranco Rosi has a new upcoming documentary. I would be surprised if Hong Sang-soo didn't release at least one new film this year too. And probably Wang Bing as well. Can't think of much more that is properly announced for the moment, but more interesting stuff will show up without a doubt. There's also a lot of 2018 releases I'm still waiting for to see. |

After reading about Ilya Khrzhanovsky's film in the link, I'm really interested in seeing it, if just by how insane and extensive the whole project seems. Totally crazy.

A lot of the best new foreign films take a couple years to make their way out here (if at all), unless you're lucky enough to see them at a film festival. So I'm excited for some 2017/2018 titles to finally start flittering into my reach. In particular, I'll probably blind buy the UK blu of One Cut of the Dead in a couple weeks – that's a low-budget Japanese indie zombie flick that's gotten a lot of good buzz, sounds really fun. That one might still get a limited theatrical release in the US this year eventually... Really, I'm interested to watch everything Third Window puts out, which includes many titles that definitely won't get a theatrical release here...
Beyond what's already been released in festivals, etc, and gotten some buzz, I can just look to some filmmakers I like and see who has something new coming in 2019... But for sure the one I'm most excited about is Joon-ho Bong's Parasite; I don't know what the movie is about, I don't want to know... Okja was a total surprise and a masterpiece, and IMO, Bong's last 3 movies are better than any other director's last 3 movies; the quality of his output is insane, he's never let me down, and my expectations are sky-high for whatever he does next is... |

Chinese political movie pulled . . . hhhhmmmm. Nothing could go wrong on that topic.
XJP has problems with Winnie the Pooh, let alone a frank display of Communist Party's failings. I hope the pull was truly due to technical issues. Then again, having to watch 'Hero' instead is not a bad thing . . . I'd like to watch all but if I had to make a list, 1. Terrence Malick's Radegund 2. Zhang Yi-Mou's One Second 3. Bong Joon-Ho's Parasite (though I did not find Okja compelling at all) 4. Kore-eda's Truth 5. Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Ends of the Earth 6. Francois Ozon's By the Grace of God (can't get enough of movies exposing the hypocrisy of catholic church) 7. Ciro Guerra's The Barbarians (wondering what he has to offer after Embrace of the Serpent) 8. Andre Konchalovsky's Sin sounds like something I'd enjoy very much 9. Makoto Nagahisa's We Are Little Zombies 10. Emin Arper's A Tale of Three Sisters 10+ Alice Waddington's Paradise Hills So many movies . . . Last edited by GRD43L; 02-11-2019 at 03:38 PM. |
