You don't need an HDTV, but its not going to be much better without one. Save up for an HDTV. Depending on how long that takes, picking up a blu-ray player will be even cheaper than it would be today.

I would NOT recommend getting one before and HDTV. Newer players will support the newer features, so waiting until you can actually make use of it is your best bet.

Most newer flat-tube standard TV's have a YCbCr connection, which means you can connect hi-def equipment like Blu-Ray to it, if it's got the cables--
But, as the set's still going to be Standard Definition, um....what would be the point?

If you think the strategy of waiting for BD players to get cheaper while getting an HDTV now saves you money, well the strategy of waitiing for HDTVs to get cheaper and buying a BD player now will save you more money, as HDTVs cost more than a BD player. And buying DVDs now for watching them now and rebuying them on BD later for watching them later will cost you more (cost: BD + DVD) than buying them on BD now for watching them now and later (cost: BD).

ditch DVD and buy Blu... you can still watch 'em, just not in HD... it'd be just the same as having a DVD though, but once you get that HDTV... you will cream your pants.

an analogy for you. if you watched football in a normal broadcast (non-hd) and then watched a HD broadcast, which would you prefer? the HD one of course. thus the neccesity for an HDTV for blu-ray. go get one.

Who says anything about him buying DVD's?

I wouldn't buy either now. Why buy a blu-ray player now when he can't really make use of it?

Save for the TV, rent DVD's and after TV is bought, save for blu-ray and buy one.

Heck, most stores don't even ask for payment and don't charge interest for the first year. Get both the blu-ray and the HDTV and enjoy 'em for a full year before you start making payments on either!

This is America dammit...you don't need money.

yes "but not in HD", so if you can`t see it in HD what will be the point to buy a Blu-ray Disc?

To be able to see the movie AND have a high definition version?

as opposed to: I buy the DVD, $15, watch the movie.
Next year: I buy The BD, $25, watch the movie. I'm $15 poorer that if I had bought only the BD in the first place and watched that.
Multiply that by 50 or 100 titles you like, and that's $750 -$1500. Hey, cost of player!
There's also a secondary side effect, he supports the format's growth, so in the end he'll have more choices and diversity of movies on the format which benefits him too.

Butterfly effect

but we have gone though this before.

You could run blu ray on anything, would you appreciate it on anything? I think not at all. The nicer the tv you have, meaning 1080 vs 420, 720 or whatever the more you'll grow to appreciate Blu more and more and more. I swear that every single individual in this forum who is running on 1080 is so deeply in love and appreciative of their blu ray that they will settle for nothing less.
