20th Century Fox 28 Days Later (2002)

I just got a copy of the 28 Days Later on blu ray. Is it possible I have been sold a pirate copy, are people pirating ble ray?

The video quality is the worst I have seen on any blu ray (or DVD) and the sound track is only stereo and mixed VERY low. The bitrate for video does seem fairly high, very odd.

I know it was shot on DV but it looks like an AVI!

Regards,
Ben

Sounds like bootleg to me. Maybe they took an HDTV rip and put it on Blu-Ray at 720p.

Sounds like the guy who sold it to you from the back of his van just sold you a SD-DVD.

Your copy is fine, there was an entire battle over this a few months ago. It just looks like crap.

When the director filmed it he had a limited budget and used SD camcorders to film. When they transferred it to HD it exposed everything making it look pixelated, washed out and blown up.

Actually this movies PQ is pretty horrible. I'm not sure how it recieve a 4.5/5 from this site. This sites PQ rating is not consistant.

if you can ONLY get stereo 2.0 from it, it is NOT a blu-ray.

I own 28 Days and it is DTS-HD MA 5.1

Yes, the PQ isn't the best, but if you don't have the 5.1 DTS_HD MA, its not Blu, period.

Also, FYI, the PQ was intended to look that was (dirty, bloody, messy), to fit the mood of the movie (blood spurting zombies), as chosen by the director. i disagree with his choice, but its still a reasonable choice.

Pretty much the widespread consensus is that for the Blu-ray version, the PQ is crap but the AQ is a substantial improvement over the DVD version. If you can, post up pictures of the packaging and disc.

Because it is true to the source. You can't make it look any better than that.

It received that rating because considering the source it looks exactly how it should.

That's how it looked in theaters..

The rating system is not based on how amazing the movie looks. It's based on how well the film is transferred and that's how it should be. If not every movie not made in the past two decades would be unfairly judged.

What do you mean it's the transfer? Isn't supposed to look like that? Hence the transfer is perfect!?

funny... i made this same EXACT point a few weeks ago about the ratings on this site... come to find out... if you read the explanation for the Visuals below it will explain everything for you.. what you want to do in the future, is look at the user reviews for Picture Quality.... i had the same complaints of how bad it looked though myself before i read the explanation for the high rating

Just watched this last night. Great film!

For the 1,000th time.....that's how it's suppose to look. The review on this site (and others) states that clear as day! Even the director himself has said that, yet the funny thing is.....people still question the transfer.
However, if you're audio mix is only 2.0 stereo, then you got owned!

That's not how it's supposed to look, use the search function and find the last thread.

The director had to pay to block off entire streets of London and hire tons of extras, all he could afford was the crappy cameras, he said so himself in an interview that's linked in that last thread.

Edit> He also stated in that same interview if he had the money he would have shot the whole thing in 35mm instead of just the last 5 minutes.

Excerpt from the interview:

RES: What elements of visual style were discussed prior to filming?

BOYLE: We wanted it to feel different in texture from normal film. Because it's an apocalypse, you can use a different hue, because nobody knows what things will look like if everybody's killed or there are no cars. So we talked about having a different texture, which we got with the DV. We would tickle the color of the film occasionally to create a slightly strange universe. Against that, I wanted this enormous energy from theose who are infected, which I was going to get through this particular menu on the camera, which allows you to alter the frame rate; things appear to be speeded up but actually it's real time. So you kind of snatch at fast images, like falling rain or a man running, snatching at them in a slightly unreliable way. The idea is that you can't quite trust your usual sense of judgment about perception, depth and distance when dealing with the infected. I was determined to do that, although there was quite a lot of opposition at one point as it was thought that it would make the film look very odd.
