Default Buying BD movies because they are BD movies?

Let me first state that I am unlikely to ever again purchase a DVD movie. In fact I haven't since late last year 2006. The exception are the movies for my son like Little Einstein, The Wiggles, etc.

The point of this thread is that I am so enamored with the picture and audio quality of BD releases that I find myself willing to purchase movies that I would not otherwise watch. For example I recently purchased TMNT and I have to say I would never have watched this if it was only available on DVD. Cars which is released in November is another title I never bought on DVD but is a must on BD. Has anyone else experienced the power of Blu in terms of buying movies you would have otherwise said, "ehh" too?

I wouldn't buy movies I wouldn't watch otherwise. I'll buy movies I've either already seen and enjoyed or movies I am pretty sure I will enjoy.

Spiderman 3 for example - haven't seen it yet, but will be getting the box set.

If I like the movie and think it is worth the High Def format (or find it for close to the same price on Blu-ray), I will buy it on Blu-ray. If it was ok, but I still want it, I will buy it on DVD unless it is cheap on BD. If I find a movie I haven't yet seen, I will rent it on BD is available, on DVD if not.
Simply put... if the price and movie is right, then I will get or watch it on BD, if it isn't, I will stick with DVD if anything.

So wouldn't that be a no?

I've bought a few that I wouldn't have otherwise wanted to see just b/c I wanted to check out the PQ and AQ. I'm not usually all that interested in documentary type videos either but I've bought several of those as well for the same reasons.

I would agree. For me it was Happy Feet, I knew I would not dig this movie, and I don't really (it's ok). However with all the talk of stunning PQ, I had to check it out. Indeed it looked fantastic. You may ask, "why not rent it". I bought it to support Blu, and I have a three year old that enjoys it.
I've even considered purchasing the Resident Evils (not to good IMO, and I despise the director) just to check out the PQ.

That's a good point also. I do the same.

It would be a "yes, but..."

I can only spend so much so if it is on BD I will prefer that one. I am not against DVDs, and if the movie is not worth High Def (say.... Aqua Teen Hunger Force quality), a DVD is just fine and likely to be cheaper.... unless it is the same price on both formats (or close to it). Then I'd get the BD.
Soo.......... if I can afford it and the movie doesn't suck... then yes.

Still, WNRI is what we used to say back at the Birth of DVD--
Back when Netflix was still a mom-and-pop operation in California (for $8 a rental), only thirty or forty people in the country owned "those souped-up laserdisk players", and online sites like DVDExpress.com united a nation of lost souls...
And back when everybody couldn't find DVD's at Blockbuster (remember "Who wants to watch the Matrix thirty times?"), thought that was a cross-section of rentals everywhere, and that you had to shell out purchases if you wanted to play with the new format--And DVD boards would be filled with "I just bought 'Twister' for $39, is it any good?", and if the answer was "no", another Previously Viewed DVD would show up for sale at Babbage's Software.

People...It's a little different now.
Now that we have a format emerging with a nationally-organized Netflix already prepared to jump onto HD and Blu rentals, and Blockbuster's announcement singlehandedly steering the industry, honestly, what IS your excuse?--Psychological nostalgia for the Old Days?

I'm not that far gone; there are plenty of movies I truly want to see so no need for me to start buying them just because they are BDs.

I can sympathize though.

And that is a valid comment about getting movies guests will enjoy. That thought gives me solace when I buy a movie that I end up not enjoying as much as I had hoped. Like Crash - bleah - can't stand that movie, and now I have two copies of it since the BD came free with my Blu-ray player.

When the Kurt Russel film "Solider" came out, all new movies on DVD were at least $24.95

Soldier came out, along with the Casper Van DIen Tarzan at $14.95 (because they were crappy bombs). We sold a pile of them. Why? Cause they were $14.95-sale discount

I pretty much only buy Blu-ray, unless BBuy is having a sale on regular DVDs (I bought Blazing Saddles on DVD for $7.50, instead of $20 for the Blu-ray on Amazon). However, I still apply the same critique of movies before I buy them on blu-ray. I won't buy a movie just to see how it looks in HD, the quality of the film is still King in deciding what I will buy.

I voted YES because I have done this on occasion. As someone else pointed out, documentaries are a good example of this. I bought Planet Earth pretty much as "eye-candy" Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy PE and I'm not sorry that I bought it. It's just not something that I would have purchased on DVD if that's the only way it was available. Generally I would say NO though.

Guilty, as charged.

I've purchased some craptastic titles on a whim just to get my Blu-Ray fix. Of course, I didn't know they were junk until I watched them but hey, that's the chance you take.

So far, Primeval takes the cake. That was one stupid movie. The PQ and AQ were really good though.

I say, if you can afford it, why not?

A friend came over with a VHS tape of him racing around the Arizona desert and I laughed and said; "I got TiVo the month it came out and I haven't had a VCR since about a year after that, so I can't watch that". Then I explained to forget VHS, DVD looks kind of old school to me at this point.

I kept alot of music performance DVDs because many will probably never come out on Blu-Ray, but beyond that, I'm essentially rebuilding a media collection in Blu-Ray.

Yes AND no.

Yes because it's Blu-Ray.

And no because it "does" provide better PQ than HD-DVD. It's a simple fact.

Cool

Ghost Rider was so-so for me, but with all the talk about stunning PQ and AQ I just had to buy it, cuz there's nowhere to rent blu-ray around here.

If its a good movie I know I will enjoy I will buy it on Blu-ray. I want to support the format, so I'm replacing some of my favorite movies on DVD with Blu-ray titles but not sure i would buy a movie on Blu-ray just because it was on Blu-ray. I try and rent everything I can from Netflix in Blu-ray though.
