Great news ! I love this movie. I am so glad I held off on the UK release especially since it had zero extras. Here's hoping Shout gives this the love it deserves with a commentary and some extras...

I also have the 101 Films version of The Alligator People, but, will still purchase this release day one. I also have the 101 Films blu-rays of Tarantula, The Mole People, and The Land Unknown, which we all know are being released here in the USA now. All purchased within a year ago with the thought that now that I have them, with my luck they will all be released here next year (meaning 2018). Well, wasn't too far off, and will still purchase all of these stateside releases, this is getting expensive now, lol. Last edited by EManT2200; 02-06-2019 at 02:38 AM. |

![]() ![]() When she is placed under hypnosis to reveal repressed memories, Jane, a nurse played by Beverly Garland, recalls her trip to a remote Louisiana swamp plantation in search of her husband, who had vanished under inexplicable circumstances. Shortly after arriving at the home, she discovers that the disappearance is connected to a failed medical experiment involving the use of reptilian hormones to help humans regenerate damaged body parts. Nothing will prepare her, however, for what she sees when she is finally face to face with the terrifying results of the laboratory work. The 1959 sci-fi horror feature, The Alligator People, filmed in stunning black-and-white CinemaScope by director Roy Del Ruth, hits the ground running with the noir trope of a narrative told in flashback over a fast-paced 74-minute run time. Garland, a stalwart of early Roger Corman films, excels every step of the way here, lending a genuine emotional core to a screen tale that could have been ridiculous instead of tragic in less capable hands. Lon Chaney Jr., as a plantation handyman with a sinister edge, also provides a recognizable presence. The bayou location, actually 20th Century Fox Studios stage sets in California, is an antagonist in itself, complete with snakes, quicksand, and, of course, alligators. I love an early moment, where Chaney Jr.'s character is explaining to Garland's heroine that she would not last 10 minutes if she were to venture mere feet from the road. It goes without saying that this film has some dated aspects, but the female lead perspective was progressive for the era of release. Because of the movie title, viewers will readily guess what sort of revelation ultimately lies in store for them. The conclusion delivers on its promise in full. Thankfully, the suspenseful buildup and the believable motivations of all involved pave the way for the sight of a person with an alligator head in such a way that conjures dread and empathy instead of unintentional humor. In present day, when trailers for Jurassic Park sequels and such showcase creature effects in full, the charm of older films like this has been all but forgotten. I, for one, am still nostalgic for the days when I would watch late night television showings of movies like The Alligator People during my childhood, eagerly awaiting a mere glimpse of the titular monster during the final moments. This Scream Factory disc looks and sounds great, even with some stray specks. I am now enjoying the podcast commentary track, courtesy of people who are just as enthused about this genre as I am.
