Default Help me choose a 75” 4K TV Sony or Samsung

I’m a veteran on the 4k uhd forums, but only post monthly or so. Could use your opinions for my upgrade.

I currently have a 65 b6 OLED and simply put, it’s way too small for my living room seating. I’m 12-14 feet away depending on where I sit, and although a 75” is probably still not big enough for ideal seating, it will be substantially better.

I ruled out the 77” oled because, well, money, and narrowed it down to a bunch of LCD’s with FALD. From my months of research, I will not settle for edge lit.
I also want a TV that can showcase hdr, and is not afraid to be bright. It is not the darkest room and my oled has suffered the last two years in such a bright open room. I also ruled out a projector for same reason, room isn’t dark.

The two TV’s that keep on coming up from the 2018 selection are the Sony XBR75X900F and the Samsung QN75Q8FN QLED. I’ve been leaning Sony because of dolby vision and from hearing Sony is hard to disappoint.
They are both in the same price range, around $3,000.
What are your opinions?
Thanks! Love the community here.

I have the 77’ Samsung KS9800 and it’s still a stunner. I feel like if you want big, expressive colors Samsung is the way to go. You’re not going to go wrong either way, it depends on what you want in regards to PQ. Personally, the only complaint I have is Samsung not having Dolby Vision and I buy a lot of 4K films on iTunes. You’re making a good decision regardless!

I too have my set in a bright room and I went with the 900e over a year ago. It’s bright enough for me, just wish it was DV capable.

Between those two, Sony all the way. Never support Samsung. But you should really be getting the 77” C8.

Sony would be a better option around here since I don't ever see Samsung getting on board with Dolby Vision anytime soon. No offense but it would be kinda silly these days to buy a 4K TV with no Dolby Vision, especially since I think HDR10+ may or may not take off at all.

Or the 85" 900F given his seating distance, I choose an LCD cause of the ambient light in my room too, plus I wanted a big size and it was more affordable

I am going to go with the Sony 85" X900F which you can get for $4499. right now or wait for the new Sony 85" X950G which will be out in a month or two. Both LCD and very well rated.

Definitely a Sony X900F over Samsung Q7. if it was a Q8 then maybe it would edge out Sony by a little bit, but for the money and future proofing with Dolby Vision. Can't go wrong with Sony 900F. Or wait for 950G which will retail for $3499

I’ll echo what everyone has said. Go for the Sony, as I do like my 55” inch version of the tv you’re looking at

Seen both these in action. Color volume is technically better on the Samsung but it's in the perceptible range, dependent also on pro calibration. You'd have to A/B to even know. Motion handling is a plus on Sony.

If like my situation you are the only one who cares about PQ accuracy? Just bear in mind viewing angles is going to be critical for that at 12 feet and coming from OLED. Sit yourself in the middle seat(s) head on and have others slightly off axis.

Dolby Vision is not the biggest deal some are making it out to be. But you get it on the Sony as you mentioned having a leaning to that feature! I'm recommending the Sony 900F for my folks to replace their 43" Panasonic edge-lit. So I have to recommend to you the same. Pretty sure the Sony is a better price at either size bracket, too.

Sony Z9D or Samsung Q9FN imo if you can get a good deal on them is worth the step up from 900F from Sony or Q8

I would definitely wait and see what the 950G will be like. Compare it to the 900F and then make your decision.

Plus, when the new models drop into the market, the old models tend to drop a bit in price. So, waiting for the new models to arrive is actually a win-win-win scenario. Keeps you open to every conceivable option available AND could save you a bit of coin should you choose the 2018 model.

Thanks. Mapped it on my wall, both 75 and 85 and think I might have to go 85”. But it’s alot more expensive. Dropping $4,000+ blows my mind but 65 to 75 might not do the trick...

On a sidenote, the 75" and 85" X950G have X-wide view tech on board, something which will likely not be so kind to the contrast and black level (see Z9F). Perhaps Sony has improved upon it, that remains to be seen. 55" and 65" X950G do not have have X-wide.

I saw that...but it does improve the viewing angles, no? I have a wide viewing setup and that actually might be a positive. Hopefully they have improved upon the tech. It seems it might not be till March/April till we know more.
