If you can't do it without subtitles, that's fine. I'll still buy it. I have an active imagination, so I'll just pretend to know what they're saying.

I'm not convinced one way or another about all these opinions and options. But I am convinced that Bob's judgement in this matter is best. And I'm guessing it's going WAY on the back burner right now because there are people in the film/Blu-ray business breaking down his door!

But I'm still pleased to have brought this subject up for discussion.

Oh, hadn't seen this thread before. I don't know if things have changed in the last couple of years, but I hope there is SOME type of sub or dub option for English speakers. Seems like it would be a shame to go through all the trouble of restoring the 3D and not have the end result be English-friendly.

That being said, I'm not the one who's had to finance the project and make ends meet. And I'll still buy it, at any rate.

Just a reminder that there is a LARGE Latin population in the USA who buy movie tickets and blurays, too. Every store that sells movies and CDs has a Latin section where I live. And every theater has a screen that plays mostly Mexican movies, in Spanish and usually with English subtitles in case people like me show up. The Spanish-speaking Latin population watch 3-D movies, too. The point is that Mexican and Latin movies sell on bluray. So there's another audience for El Corazón y La Espada. Do keep them in mind when you decide which versions to include or leave out.

The production costs have to be kept very low. I don't mind breaking even but sure can't afford to lose money.

My understanding is that it was only the Spanish version that the 3-DFA had the rights to, so that's promising. Just having the Spanish version is fine with me but I really do hope subtitles are included - as someone who has spent many hours fiddling with subtitle files I'm sure there will be people more than happy to do this as a labour of love.

Is it reasonable to assume Romero dubbed his own voice in the English language version? I can't find any information on that. If that version was only released in 1956, I suppose it's possible that the dubbing was done after his involvement with the film had concluded.

Mexican films did play in the USA to the Latino population without subs or dubs and still do; recently I saw Más negro que la noche 3D without a dub and no subs.

As an aside, Mexico made great films at a fraction of what American films cost. I own over a hundred Mexican films from the epoca del oro de cine mexicana including all the films directed by Emilio Fernandez and many by Ismael Rodriguez and Alberto Gout. Among others. Also have a large collection of Mexican films about their Revolution. Many Mexican films didn't get English language alternates, dubs nor subtitles because there was no money for it unless an American company paid for it. In the early 1950s Germany started investing in the Mexican film industry so some films got German versions along with German co-stars.

There was an English-language dub. Unless either has changed recently, there are not yet subtitles for the film, and the 3-D Film Archive only owns rights to the original Spanish-language version.

It did play at movie theaters and drive-in's in the US from 1956 to 58 as a part of a double feature. I would think they would have to be in English.

By this fall, you will be seeing his long-lost 3-D feature EL CORAZON Y LA ESPADA on Blu-ray as part of our highly anticipated 3-D RARITIES II collection from Flicker Alley.

We're not joking; this rarity has not seen anywhere in 3-D since a few red/cyan anaglyphic bookings in 1954. The black and white cinematography - utilizing the Howard A. Anderson (Star Trek) stereo camera rig - will knock you out!
