Pretty much EVERYONE was buying a DVD player, and a classic movie hitting this new format was an EVENT. Now people are just content to stream everything, and have zero interest in any movie made prior to the early-2000s. I will always want to OWN movies.
I remember those days very well, there was a kind of zeitgeist with collecting movies at the time that many people shared.

Speaking of black bars, why does Netflix bother shooting films in the 2:35 format? These films will never be shown theatrically. I imagine there are still people out there who don't like black bars so if Netflix is trying to change the way people watch movies, aren't they going about it the wrong way?

Ah, the days of waiting on when the Holy Trinity of Trilogies (Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Back to the Future) was finally getting released on DVD. The anticipation!!

Keeping doubles? Why?!

Yes Ill keep DVDs with extras not on the blu-rays etc (like Master & Commander disc 2 for instance) but not otherwise. If you want to watch the film why would you pick up the DVD?! Get rid - save space.

Netflix buys most of their "Netflix" movies instead of starting from the ground up. The filmmakers involved are likely making the film with the aspirations that it will get a theatrical release; it's not their fault the studio's involved sold it off to Netflix. Netflix has tried to get some theatrical showings of the films they buy or have made though; it's the large theater chains that are snubbing them.

Regarding DVD duplicates of blu-ray films, if the blu-ray wasn't already a combo pack, I put the DVD in with the blu-ray case, usually by buying an adhesive hub to attach to the case or getting a blu-ray case that can hold multiple discs. Then I just recycle the DVD case. If the blu-ray had a DVD with it already, then I sell the DVD I owned, regardless if it was once something rare or special since space is now more important to me.

If I have upgraded to Blu, I usually give the DVD to my brother and his family.

I was giving them away, but it seems no one wants them any more, so I just put them in storage.

I hang onto a few in the event they had more special features or an authorized widescreen crop of a 4:3 release (TV-movie, etc...) They typically have too little resale value to make them worth trying to sell on ebay so most of them just get tossed in the trash.

It's a sad day in the film industry when nobody wants a free DVD

At least dump them off at Goodwill instead of trashing them.

I only keep doubles for titles that have a different transfer or new restoration.

Example, I have the original Umbrella 1080i 25fps BD of Razorback and their recent 4k remastered release just to highlight the staggering transfer differences and how much better the remastered is. I also have the Universal BD of 1994's Street Fighter (included in the Van Damme 5 pack with a proper version of Lionheart) for the original variant of the Universal logo that sieges into the opening credits, while I bought the cheap German Sony BD for the superior transfer that's better encoded, more colorful with far less EE, plus the rare Columbia TriStar Film Distributors logo that cheaply replaces the Universal logo.

Yeah, thrift stores will take old DVDs and VHS tapes too, at least the ones I donate to. I don't donate movies there myself but when I donate other stuff, I take a look around sometimes and there's often lots of interesting titles on their shelves. A few months ago I found a pristine copy of Sextette on DVD for a buck.

I always trade them in at the local record music shop or sell them online. There was a short time where I was giving double dip Blu-ray’s and DVDs to a young female coworker after I discovered that she loved movies and heard her say how much she prefers discs over streaming. I swear I thought to myself maybe this generation isn’t doomed after all. She left the job though so I have almost no one in real life to talk to about what I’m watching except my wife who tires of my movie watching ways at times.

I usually make hybrids.
Speed bonus DVD with Speed Blu-ray
Day After Tomorrow bonus DVD with Day After Tomorrow Blu-ray
Armageddon Criterion stuff with Armageddon Blu-ray (Steelbook)
etc etc
And I keep DVDs that have a nice steelbook package or are rare in general.

I have quite a few doubles. Some duplicate Blu-rays (different editions), but all justifiable in my eyes.

I also agree with the comments that DVDs are 10 a penny and not worth the sale, so goodwill or bin.

Throw em in the recycle bin instead!
I keep for features that didn't make it to blu, or if the package is just too nice to give away for what few pennies the used store will offer me. Like Near Dark, got offered a buck for the 2-disc dvd and kept it.

Some withoput any "keeping value" are literally hard to give away, but the library will usually take them off my hands. If not, then it's recycle bin with one exception. This pile of crap I didn't want to exist after fast-forwarding through most of it. So I couldn't give to the library and then tossed in recycle, but worried "what if someone working sees it and decides to grab it and try it", so I moved it to trash! Still the only legit disc I have ever just thrown out, and hopefully the only one! Cracks me up to see that new amazon price, but check and know the $1.66 for a used one is $5 too high; and that's if you could get free shipping!

As for made for TV or streaming 2.35 movies, some just think movies look better in that ratio whether they ever get projected or not. I know cuz I am one of those who feels like this.
