- SD - HD and up, including 4K and HDR. I just purchased Dunkirk through a Movies Anywhere code and have it in 4K Dolby Vision on my Apple TV 4K. On my phone (iPhone 6s, so not HDR), in the TV app, The Dark Knight appears as 4k Dolby Vision but The DarK Knight Rises appears once as 4K/DV plus once as "Batman - The Dark Knight Rises" in HD only. The TV app includes more than the iTunes purchased movies so it can be a little confusing. Better check on your Apple TV 4K, or, on your phone, via the iTunes Store. If by clicking on this link you see the 4K version and have a button to download on your iPhone, then you definitely should have the 4K version on your Apple TV 4K. https://itunes.apple.com/us/movie/th...ht/id764632601 |

It seems to me iTunes has only 2 tiers of quality: 1 is SD and the other is HD and up. |

You need to check the pulldown while the movie is playing to see if you actually have the 4K version. It is possible to own the HD version without getting the free 4K upgrade. For example, if you bought or redeemed an HD copy through Movies Anywhere or another MA provider, it will only be viewable in HD at iTunes.

So there is a 3rd tier actually in iTunes, for HD movies coming from other platforms. The sad part is that I can no longer buy the 4K HDR version on iTunes (it says I have already purchased it), nor gift it to me ( I do not have a US credit card anymore) |

It is disappointing at both Vudu and iTunes that the 4K/UHD Dunkirk have the black bars for the IMAX footage. Makes sense for iPhones, but not for 4K 16:9 screens.
The 4K UltraHD Blu-ray disc solves the problem for the 4K TV at home. What would be incredible is for iTunes to have a custom 4:3 release for iPad. The entire frame of the IMAX footage would fill the screen nicely! For those who have encountered issues with Digital code redemptions and the 4K/UHD results, there is a helpful web page to check before purchase or code entry: Redeeming 4K/UHD Codes |

EDIT: So...a few films that were showing up before as 4K HDR/DV are now just HD & HDR/DV. This is all very messy. Last edited by THE DARK KNIGHT; 12-23-2017 at 06:08 AM. |

On my iPhone X inceptions shows as HD/Dolby vision/iTunes extra. Shouldn't it be 4K. I didn't think HD/Dolby vision is a valid combination

What I understand is that Dolby Vision and HDR are only available for movies available as 4K. I do not know if that is a requirement or just the present situation. From what I also understand, if a movie is available in 4K with Dolby Vision or HDR10, it must also have media assets in the same Dolby Vison or HDR10 at lower bitrates/resolutions. This allows to handle varying download speeds, as well as screens which do not require 4K. Since the iPhone X's display resolution is slightly above 1080p (2436-by-1125-pixel resolution at 458 ppi), it is very possible that it uses the 4K resolution medium if available bandwidth is sufficient. Or not. 1080p/HDR is a very valid combo. In Europe (where I live), Netflix shows Star Trek Discovery in 1080p HDR (probably not in 4K not to make CBS customers angry, since I believe CBS does not broadcast or stream in 4K) |

I've contacted Warner Brothers regarding this issue and received a response that the are 'looking into it'.
I think it's important that digital versions of movies are the same versions as the physical disks. For me, coming from the disk version and seeing that the digital version remained 'letter boxed' throughout meant a no buy. |

I may be in the minority here, but I greatly prefer a movie be one aspect ratio the whole way through. My projector screen is an Elite Dual Max with two screens, one for 16x9 and the other is 2.35:1. Movies like the Dark Knight are a pain because you either have to watch the whole thing in 16x9 and put up with gray black bars or the IMAX portions are projected onto black matting. I for one say keep it all one or the other.

I received a reply back from WB regarding this topic. See below:
“I just spoke to our mastering team and as of now, all WB Digital 4K movies will have the Original Theatrical Aspect ratio that was intended by the Filmmaker For the upcoming digital version of Aquaman. This title will retain the IMAX aspect ratio (meaning it will open up, top and bottom of frame, during those big visuals scenes) This was requested on both the original theatrical release of Aquaman and for our digital version by James Wan. For Dunkirk, we followed exactly what Christopher Nolan wanted aspect ratio wise for the digital 4K version of Dunkirk. It will be different from film to film since we let the talent and filmmaker make that final decision.” |

Sorry if I'm dragging this back up but I just upgraded finally to a 4K OLED TV. I finally purchased Blade Runner 2049 on iTunes and noticed all scenes are now matted vs being variable with the IMAX scenes. Same with Interstellar and other Nolan movies.
It seems weird that on the Blu-Rays the filmmaker would choose to leave the variable aspect ratios but for digital keep it all at one? Or am I understanding this incorrectly? |

I'm not aware of Blade Runner 2049 having switching aspect ratios even on the UHD Bluray. |
