I am interested in buying a blu-ray burner to back up data and was looking at this one: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Panasonic/SW5582BK/
I was wondering if you think it is worth waiting for a faster version. I know you always do not want to burn at the highest speed like 16x but 2x is slow and not really sure if it is really worth the $540 asking price... |

I wouldn't really care about speed if I were you, I mean have a look at the cost of blank blu rays first.

They're actually not that expensive if you factor in the cost of the average blu ray player to begin with. I have one in my laptop, and it's great!

Well that's why I buy RE versions. I mean I use the PC to watch the movies as well so you just go with RE's and then there are no losses.

My hard drives are configured in a 5 drive raid5 array controlled by a top of the line 3ware card.... my data throughput is pretty darned quick. Even still, when I try to burn a DVD at 8X, it slows down due to data throughput issues, 8X in DVD terms is a tad over 10MB/s.. it usually slows down to about 6ish which is 7.9MB/s 2X in BD is 9MB/s... if you made a BD burner that burned at 4x... it would be difficult to feed it data fast enough to sustain the rate. Don't hold out for faster burners, they are plenty fast already. Last edited by Iceman_II; 08-10-2007 at 09:12 PM. |

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I am going to wait a few weeks to see if apple will come out with updated Mac Pro's w/ blu-ray but if not, I will place an order for the drive.
