A PATCH OF BLUE (1965)
NEW 2019 1080p HD MASTER Run Time 105:00 Subtitles English SDH Sound Quality DTS HD-Master Audio 2.0 - English Aspect Ratio 2.35:1, 16 X 9 LETTERBOX Product Color B&W Disc Configuration BD 50 Special Feature: Commentary by Director Guy Green; Featurette "A Cinderella Named Elizabeth";Theatrical Trailer (HD) Selina D’Arcey is blind, yet she sees the world anew through the eyes of kindly Gordon Ralfe (Academy Award® winner* Sidney Poitier). An awkward Cinderella raised by a bigoted, abusive mother, Selina is white. She does not know that the man helping her learn to dial a pay phone or find the restroom is black. Elizabeth Hartman’s luminous screen debut as Selina earned her a Golden Globe® Award as Most Promising Newcomer. On the veteran side as Selina’s blowsy, bitter mother, Shelley Winters won her second Oscar.®** As directed by Guy Green (Oscar®-winning cinematographer for Great Expectations, 1947), the performances are timeless in A Patch of Blue. So is this fine film’s heart-soaring impact. ![]() |

I’m thrilled that this was announced today. It’s one of those movies I’ve seen several times on TCM and never thought I would be able to get on Blu. Sidney Poitier is ( as always) absolutely terrific, as is Elizabeth Hartman. The story just sucked me in right away the first time I saw it. The story is very touching and also has some nice twists.
I especially enjoy this for Elizabeth Hartman. I think she could have been a terrific actor if not for personal issues that developed in the years following this movie. She died far too young. Wikipedia her and see what I mean. Day 1 purchase without a doubt! |

This is a rare film, for any who haven't seen it. In a world of films that almost seem to bash us over the heads with stereotypical characters and political crap, essentially ignoring the more complex and universal human element, and I am including films of the era, this film takes an African American man and a blind Caucasian woman and asks us to forget these definitions, as the definitions/identifiers are dwarfed by the larger considerations of how each individual handles their life and all of their individual life-circumstances.
The identifiers fall away and we get to see how each individual is changed by how the people around them choose to treat them and changed more by how they allow themselves to be manipulated by the opinions of others. Similar to Poitier's incredible turn in Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, in which a man finds that he is not defined by anything other than what he chooses, he gives my favourite performance out of all of his films, in A Patch of Blue, as a man who discovers and pursues true freedom. He crafts a character who could be any one of us, in any circumstance, so perfectly universal is his performance. Hartman, instead of the typically fearless female protagonist, thankfully, portrays a woman who conquers natural human fear with grace and determination, refusing to waste her life. Her performance is remarkably convincing and, also, seems to defy the specificity of her character's blindness, leaving the viewer thinking about what they have yet to conquer in their own life. As a person with a life-long debilitating illness, I found so much inspiration in this film as a young girl, I won't even attempt to describe it. If you haven't seen it, this is one you should really pick up and, if you're on the fence about it, read about it here and over at IMDB. I can't praise this film enough. |

Has anyone heard any updates on this release?
I thought I had pre-ordered it months ago from Amazon..,but never arrived today. Blu-ray.com says it’s supposed to be out today, May 28. But I can’t currently find it even listed on Amazon. Is it officially delayed? |
