I've read the first two Meg novels, and Steve Alten is a writer of staggeringly mediocre writing ability, akin to those who novelise screenplays into book form as a franchise piece, Mr Alan Dean Foster excepted. He's a hack. Hopefully the second film can do better from what source material they chose to use...

I wasn’t a fan of the first, but I will give this one a chance.

I enjoyed the first one... I'm kind of torn between the PG-13 and R rating options. I would have liked The Meg to be a little more brutal than it was.. but I don't want it to the level of say Deep Blue Sea...

I guess my sweet spot is of course my favorite film of all time- JAWS.... still looking for a movie that has that perfect balance.

I enjoyed it as an easy watch popcorn flick BUT why the hell do these sorts of movies need sequels and to be made into a franchise ???
Imagine it these days "The Thing 6" - awful

just go and make another 1 off "The Meg" style movie about something else.

There are 7 books in the Meg series, they won't run out of material for a while.

Why? Is that a serious question?

The movie didn't really resemble the book that much. More inspired by I felt.

I would rather have them releasing a different version of the first movie with some more bonus features.

The Meg 2: Jason gets to head-butt the shark. He must have felt frustrated he couldn't kick anything. For a movie that is supposed to be a thriller or horror-type film, I was laughing all the way through the movie. I wanted that scene where Jonas' ex-wife was in that reporter's plastic bubble on the surface of the ocean and the shark comes up and eats her. That is the ultimate scene in the first novel. Still, it was a pretty good movie. I just thought Jason Statham was the wrong actor for the adaption.

The first was okay. I'd rather see Statham fighting or something.

Same way I feel. Jason Statham is a great action star for films like The Transporter and The Mechanic but it just felt like he was in over his head, and out of his element, in a shark movie. I kept expecting Statham to punch or kick something and watching him trying to act like someone suffering from PTSD, when he's in that submersible, getting read to go after his ex-wife at the bottom of the Marianas Trench just didn't come off as authentic. Drama is just isn't his acting medium. I think it was the rest of the supporting cast that managed to pull together and make the film a success.

But, considering that this movie has been in developmental hell for as long as it was, fans of Steve Alten's Meg series didn't want this movie to fail. But, I think that this franchise shouldn't focus on adapting any of the books but to rather write its own story and go from there.

The first film was a bag of wank. They actually managed to make a film around a megaladon dull. Should have been R rated and had some fun with it. But instead we got a megaladon slowly towing a barge with some kids on it.

First movie was stupid but in a fun way, so I'll run with it. Just make it R rated and you'll see my butt in a theater.
