seems this existing thread on the hts6100 would be sufficient...?

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=59678

It's a great starting point, HTIB's normally get roasted around here (not well received). IMHO, they're perfect for many situations and people, I started with one, good way to get into it and then maybe branch out to more expensive stuff if the bug catches you. That's a great receiver, I have the 605.

just got my 6100 today. I put in the dark knight to test out the sound. I know that the movie is not 7.1, but I was surprised that it was the very back two speakers that werent working and that only the speakers on the fronts and sides were operating. Is this right?...shouldnt the sound come from the back and front if its 5.1 and not the front and sides? What should I do? Also, what is the best equalizer setting for watching movies for anyone that has this?(anyone with knowledge of a 7.1 question is free to answer the first question)

Your setup is working properly. When a 5.1 source is being played through a 7.1 system, the two speakers at the very back will be silent. When a 7.1 track plays, those rear speakers fill in the space between the the two speakers at your shoulders.

in response to ur speaker setup on which speakers to get go check out this link http://www.triadspeakers.com/products/icb8lcr.html ( I have these for my fronts they have some pretty kick ass speakers i have in for my 6.1 system you can get the l,r and speakers in ur ceiling so they face down at u instead of just shoot straight down

thanks for the reply...I am new to audio! I am kind of thinking out-loud here...but I think when watching a 5.1 disc it sounds much better when the sound is coming from behind(like those home theatre layout pics). Wouldnt it make sense to just disable the 7.1 for now...since I don't have any 7.1 discs and just make is a 5.1 set-up?

I feel like I know the answer to that question, but want to throw it out there to someone with more experience.

The back speakers are your 6th and 7th speaker on your 7.1 set-up. If you want those two to work with a 5.1 movie try changing the listening modes. You probably would see either ES or matrix or neo 6. This was with my old Onkyo HTIB 7.1 but without the DTS master and True HD. Just experiment, it won't hurt.

ok guys...solved one problem and now I have a whole new one! I switched over to TrueHD and the sound quality was great for a few seconds...then there was a constant low sounding click from the speakers. Then the video started to get choppy and it would skip. Any ideas what is going on? I am so close to getting this thing workin!

it works great. I am very happy with it. It took some time for me to learn how to use it, but the sound is excellent. All I need now is for my speaker stands to come in and I can start taking some pics of my ht!
