Mods! Still can’t post this to the “members review” section.

Slightly edited-

THE DEVIL'S NIGHTMARE arrives on blu from Mondo Macabro in what can only be assumed will be the final word on the subject. Scanned from the original negative (more on that later,) the film looks better than ever. That's not saying much, since this has been a PD staple since the dawn of DVD, never before looking more than adequate (Image DVD) and most of the time looking downright awful in numerous multi-pack releases. This disc is a significant upgrade, but is far from a flawless presentation. Color is mostly strong, and detail is generally excellent. That said, there are some dupey shots (the Capri's tire being flattened, and the bathing scene for example) and more than a bit of black crush. The cinematography is all over the map in this film, with some shots wonderfully moody, juxtaposed with others that are overlit to the point of distraction. The black crush is likely due to the film's low budget roots, and therefore understandable. Issues that keep this from perfection include minor damage to the negative, color fluctuation, and a bit of flicker in some sequences. One perplexing aspect of MM's disc is the schizophrenic nature of the opening and closing credits. The opening is from a European source and the closing credits from the US release, featuring a completely different typeface that I find jarring. This leads me to believe that the negative of the film was not the sole source scanned for MM's release.

Audio is the mono english dub and the original mono french language track. The english is a bit harsh, with some significant hiss in one scene. Overall it's acceptable, but I can't help but wish the magnificent Euro-lounge score by Alessandro Alessandroni had been given more attention. The french language option is marginally better, with at least one variant music cue. Having grown up with the english dub, it's difficult to go with the original audio, but it will no doubt be the go-to for new initiates.

The good news is that all of this is nitpicking and I am very happy with Mondo Macabro's THE DEVIL'S NIGHTMARE. A huge upgrade. An essential purchase for the Euro-horror buff.

With trailers, interviews, and a commentary from Troy Howarth.

??? There is a French audio option. Maybe you meant to say subtitles? There are options for the original French and the dubbed English audio, but only English subtitles.

I see what you mean about the “dupey” look of the bathtub scene, but the tire being speared looks like it was a zoom-in on the negative, done by the film’s editor in post production. It has that overly grainy look that you get when you zoom in on the negative. Unless I’m misunderstanding your terminology. The bathing scene looks different.

Anyway, I don’t think any of these things could be improved upon except maybe the flicker and color fluctuation that occurs occasionally, but I think Mondo did a fantastic job and overall the disc looks amazing, considering how we’re used to seeing this movie.

I haven’t even watched the extras or read the booklet yet!

You are correct. My apologies.

You have to access it from the main menu after pressing "play." My older LG deck in our family room automatically started the english version.

I agree. I admit to being nitpicky, as this is one of my all-time favorites.

I ordered both this and The Bushwacker/Ravager from Mondo in January and I haven't gotten a shipping notice yet for either one.

The blu-ray.com listing says it will have a reversible cover, a booklet and the release date is May 14th: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-D...lu-ray/238797/

It will not have a booklet, reversable cover, or lobby cards (referred to as "Figure/replica/props/memorabilia included" in the description).

Those will only be included in the limited edition.

Wow! That's really nice! You should work for the labels. Is that digital or physical paint?

I'm classically trained, but switched to all digital in 2006.

Currently, I do work for Bottleneck Gallery in NYC. Also, I'll have work on display at Chiller Theatre Expo in April.

THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS, EVERYONE!

Indeed ...and that's how errors happen on here when everything is simply copied from the existing Limited Edition listing.

Obviously I’m not the only one who considers this the best non-Bava, Argento, or Fulci Euro-horror film. A collector bought a print of the earlier piece posted above, then commissioned a new piece in the US insert size:
