Default Silent Hill (2006) (Collector's Edition)

Silent Hill Blu-ray

Christophe Gans' SILENT HILL (2006) gets a Scream Factory Double-Blu this July:

Quote:
**NEW TITLE ANNOUNCEMENT**

The 2006 horror hit SILENT HILL (starring Radha Mitchell and based off the popular game with the same name) is coming to Blu-ray this Summer from us in an all-new Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release!

Here are the early details we have at present time:

• National street date for North America (Region A) is July 9th.

• Release will come with a slipcover (guaranteed for three months after its original release date).

• The newly-commissioned artwork pictured comes to us from Devon Whitehead (Trick r Treat, Valentine, Sleepwalkers). This art will be front-facing and the reverse side of the wrap will feature alternate theatrical artwork (woman walking towards the town’s sign in the fog).

• Extras will be confirmed on a later date but we can confirm today this will be a 2-disc set and fully-loaded with extras. We are working closely with Director Christopher Gans.

Pre-orders on our site begin today which includes the Blu-ray plus a rolled 18” x 24” poster of the new art. The poster is exclusive to us and will be made at a limited-run: https://www.shoutfactory.com/product...roduct_id=7102

Is this any good? It’s not as bad as the Resident Evil movies is it?

As an adaptation of “Silent Hill” it’s a mixed bag but it’s much more faithful than the RE films.

I liked the movie plenty, it will depend on what it brings to the plate. I have the UK Metalpak which to me is the best the cover art can get. The cover art from Scream Factory isn't doing anything for me.

This should* be an upgrade over the old BD, which was MPEG-2 (thus automatic edge enhancement) and a low bitrate encode on a BD-25.

*I mean, if Shout doesn't screw it up. But considering the original BD was sub-par, it should be an upgrade regardless (not counting the extras).

no it's not great. I'll probably get it anyway as I dragged my girlfriend (now wife) to see it at the time. Some laughable moments. Great atmosphere, but it holds up to the video game adaptations reputation.

I am definitely interested in this one, but truly wish someone would release a nice special edition of Gans' Brotherhood of the Wolf here in the states. Now that movie deserves some lovin'

I thought the fist Resident Evil was really good, and IMO a much better film than this. Though some of the later entries in that franchise went laughably and truly off the deep end - to the point of being unwatchable to me. I think this one is somewhere in between (in terms of quality). It's not nearly as bad as many of the RE entries were, but it's not really up to the cinematic standards of the 1st Resident Evil either...

If you didn't even enjoy the original Resident Evil, then you might as well stay away or at least rent it first.

I was really disappointed in this one, it's nowhere near as great as Brotherhood of the Wolf.

bonehica I HIGHLY recommend this Korean Import version of Brotherhood:
https://www.amazon.com/Brotherhood-Wolf-Directors-Cut-Blu-ray/dp/B0102AL1HI/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1MJWBRFE7QB9R&keywords=brotherhood +of+the+wolf+blu+ray&qid=1554323451&s=movies-tv&sprefix=brotherhood+of+the+%2Caps%2C757&sr=1-1-catcorr

For picture quality it blows away the DVD releases, and of course it has English subtitles and is REGION FREE!
Note that it is the FULL Director's Cut (which I prefer), it doesn't have the shorter theatrical cut (which is no loss to me).
Also no extras, but I kept my old DVDs for the extras, figured they would still be in Standard def vs Hi Def anyway.

The flipside of the cover will the same poster art from the metalpak.
I really dig the first SH flick, so I'll be upgrading my R1 BD for sure. Just not hyped about the new art (it has some spots that are great, but overall too busy and too focused on the nurses who appear for like 2 minutes), so no poster pre-order this time.

Yup, I have that version! And, the three disc Canadian DVD set as well, because as you said, the Korean is bare bones. And I prefer the DC too

Thumbs up

Awesome, great film; Gans put the art film in video game adaptations. If SONY won't let 'em do a new scan, maybe they can "work the levers" a little, bring the US master in line with what I understand is Gans' preferred look for the film as seen in the French, Metropolitan release (brighter, punchier contrast, better encode).

Also: Radha Mitchell forever.

French release from Metropolitan Film & Video is still clear winner here, unless, like you said, Sh!t Factory doesn't screw it up. Hmm... Was there Japanese release with HIGH bitrate from this?

Edit. Never mind the Japanese release, it's MPEG-2 also.

Hoping this will include the long lost deleted scenes! Shame it won't get a 4K UHD though, the HDR could really help with the dark scenes in this.

In addition to this, if he doesn't care about faithfulness/doesn't know the games, it's definitely got some interesting visuals and atmosphere to it. It looks much more like a "real" movie than any of the RE movies, partly due to its greater reliance on practical effects.

My memory of it was that the plot was trying to hit some game beats (it really does a good job of copying the atmosphere of the beginning of Silent Hill 1 after you're in the foggy town), moves along reasonably for an hour or so, and then it's like the makers realized it didn't have much time left so it abruptly goes into a big climax with no warning that didn't work at all. I haven't seen it since the theater though.

Definitely better than any Resident Evil movie & it has some good creepy moments & decent effects, so being that I don’t have this on Blu yet I’ll pick it up, cool poster too.

Great news! Still probably one of the better video games to film adaptation.

The Sony release is rather poor but this mentions nothing on a new scan?

Silent Hill is the best "video game movie" as far as I'm concerned. If you like atmospheric, visually-driven horror films, you'll probably enjoy Silent Hill. They did the right thing by leaning heavily on the Akira Yamaoka music from the games.

The original BluRay left a lot to be desired, so I'm open to a double dip. Hopefully Scream Factory does a good job.

SH is one of my all-time favorite video game series and this movie has held up surprisingly well, so I am all over this. It's not perfect, but it nails the look and feel of the games better than any other adaptation I've seen. (Let's pretend Revelations doesn't exist...) I'd be happy with a new encode and all the original extras that never made it to the first Blu-ray, but the thought of new bonus features (and remastered video, fingers crossed) is very exciting.

Edit: Upon further thought, while I like the style of the new cover well enough, I do wish the artist featured Pyramid Head more prominently than the nurses. Neither really make sense outside of the context of Silent Hill 2 (as manifestations of the male protagonist's psyche), but while I can accept Pyramid Head as the de facto villain of the franchise because his design is so iconic, leaning on the sex appeal of the nurses feels icky, especially since the film itself features so many strong female characters.
