Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, who earned an Oscar nomination for writing Bridesmaids together, are set to reunite on the Lionsgate comedy Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar, Collider has learned. The duo will star in the film, which they also co-wrote and will produce along with Gloria Sanchez Productions.

The story follows best friends Barb (Wiig) and Star (Mumolo) as they leave their small midwestern town for the first time to go on vacation in Vista Del Mar, Florida, where they soon find themselves tangled up in adventure, love, and a villain’s evil plot to kill everyone in town.

Josh Greenbaum (Too Funny to Fail) is directing the movie, which Jessica Elbaum, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are producing via their female-focused production company Gloria Sanchez. Lionsgate executives Meredith Wieck and Jim Miller will oversee production for the studio, which will release the movie next year.

I saw the teaser for this in front of Bombshell, this looks absolutely atrocious. I honestly thought it was based on a TV show or something, because I'm getting flashbacks to something like the awful Absolutely Fabulous movie. Has that same tone and poor writing. I doubt this will be any good when it releases, especially since it's written by the people who wrote Bridesmaids, which was bad in my opinion.

I don’t understand, are Barb and Star sort of established characters from SNL or something. The trailer seems to assume I should be shocked by them being revealed, but I dunno who they are. Plus the excess of it all implies this is some sort of big screen adaptation.

I might be mistaken but I think they are original characters created for this movie. Unless someone knows something otherwise.

Yeah, when I saw the trailer in theaters I thought this was another TV to movie adaptation like Absolutely Fabulous or Mrs. Brown's Boys (both movies that were trash by the way). But my research all points to these characters being 100% original for this movie. I guess trying to make a duo comedy team franchise I guess, but I doubt this will go far because it looks like absolute trash.

Saw an interview last year where Damon Wayans Jr said this was in the style of Mike Myers' classics like Wayne's World and Austin Powers. That alone had my interest.

I have to be honest... trailer sold me.
