Default Rear surround placement.

Hi, First Time poster coming out of the box with a question. I have been admiring the theater galleries for a while now and have noticed several 7.1 systems with the rear surrounds fairly close together.

I have two speakers available to upgrade from a 5.1 to 7.1 system. My wife does not want me mounting the rears on the wall. We do have a tall desk that I could put the speakers on each corner. The spacing between the speakers will only be 36". They would be 6 to 8 feet behind the main listening area. Would the close spacing between the speakers diminish the value of having a 7.1 system? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

In my receivers set up it gave me the option of less than a foot or 1 to 4 feet apart. So I believe either is ok depending on personal preference. Here is a link to Dolby's suggested 7.1 set up

You could always go 6.1 or use the THX 7.1 set-up. Couple of different options

yeah if your getting a 7.1 system setup then closer is usually used for 6.1 i believe, farther apart when the movie is in 7.1, but thats just what i think *LoL*. I'm sure someone thats a coolass at describing all this for you will help you alot better.

I figure having them apart would sound alot better when the movie is 7.1.

Thanks for the replies. Upon further investigation, the first thing that I need to do is get a Blue Ray player to get the 7.1 content, then figure out the speaker placement.

Make sure that your AVR can Matrix the sound into 7.1.
