Default My brother got into a car accident.

He was turning left through a yellow light when someone tried to beat it and t-boned him. He had two friends in the car. He seems fine, they are keeping him for observation. His friends should be fine too.

The person who hit them was PERFECTLY fine. Their car was towed away by the polices impound tow truck. I'm thinking they either had a bad license or no registration/insurance.

This sucks.

What sucks is the car was finally all paid for and he had just bought those rims a month ago. I went with him to buy them. I had also just bought him some new PIAA light bulbs.

Sucks for sure. But in the end it's just property, the important thing is everyone is going to walk away.

Taking off work today to go visit him. They should discharge him later today.

Stupid hospital though. The ambulance took him to a hospital whee they needed to wait 1 hour until they could unload them.

What pisses me off is that it happened right near my apartment at a light notorious for accidents.

Good to here everyone is ok...hopefully insurance can take care of the car.

From the pic looks like there isn't any frame damage.

That's the worst part...... If I were your brother, I'd find out if his insurance has any restrictions on where he can take it for estimates...... and if it's just in the state of California for instance..... if you're in Southern Cali, threaten to have them tow it to Northern Cali for an estimate...... basically just threaten to make their life hell until they agree to total it out.

I wouldn't want a car after it's had any sort of major damage like that..... no matter what shop you take it to, it'll never be the same.....

Hopefully they total it out for him.

But on the flip side of the coin, he JUST finished paying it off. If they total it out, he's going to get whatever the current blue book value of the car is, which will likely be a lot less than he paid for it. In order to get a new car (or even a decent used one), depending on what he is looking for, he will likely have to either go back into car payments again or cough up a bunch of his own money up front to avoid car payments because the check he would get from totaling it out likely won't cover the full cost of a replacement vehicle.

While safety is extremely important, if there is no frame damage and if the car can be safely repaired, that may be a better way to go rather than totaling it out.

I actually just paid off my own car last month, and this is how I would feel if I were in this situation.

well at least he's ok. thats all that really matters. why are they keeping him for observation tho..what'd he hurt? not to take away from the seriousness out it at all, but it doesn't look like the driver would have gotten any injuries..assuming he was driving that is

Side impact like that they may be worried about internal damage.

Yeah, the important thing is that all people are okay. This could've ended very differently.

As others have said, it's definitely a good thing that he is OK.

On the rims: are they at least salvageable? It looks like they may have been spared of the brunt of that collision. It looks like most of the impact was on the passenger-side door.

It probably will be totaled because of the cost of air bags. It's something like $2000 EACH airbag that deployed to replace them. So if two or three airbags went off, it gets to the point where that alone is more then the cost of just cutting a check for a new car, ignoring the rest of the damage.
