Horror of Frankenstein Blu-ray

From Shout Factory

The dead shall rise again!

"Horror Of Frankenstein remains a solid, often surprising film that is perfect for horror fans who can appreciate a few sly laughs being mixed in with the usual chills." – AllMovie.com

Young Victor Frankenstein returns from medical school with a depraved taste for beautiful women and fiendish experiments. When he runs out of fresh body parts for his research, he turns to murder to complete his gruesome creation. Now, his monster (David Prowse, the Star Wars films) has unleashed its own horrifying killing spree. The true horrors of Dr. Frankenstein have only just begun ...

Probably my least favorite Hammer, but I'm glad they're getting it out there for those who don't have it.

Listen, bottom of the barrel Hammer is still enjoyable to me and I already own this one for many reasons including what you've posted above. But boy does it make me groan.

I still get a kick out of Kate O'Mara playing her character as a 16-year-old in an early scene in the film; at nearly age 30 in reality, it may qualify as the biggest suspension of disbelief in the whole movie!

Always good to see that golden-haired beauty Veronica Carlson in a film, she always exuded a natural warmth and sweetness. Recently caught the 1975 Tyburn offering THE GHOUL for the first time, and though it was great to see her reunited with Peter Cushing, ye gods, the film itself was such a plodding bore...though it was interesting to catch an early film appearance by John Hurt as a thorough psycho.

I saw the double-feature Horror of Frankenstein / Scars of Dracula many times when it was
new. I had fun with it, I must admit. I never watch the Anchor Bay DVDs, however.

Jimmy Sangster said he intended Horror of Frankenstein to be a satire. The film is a total failure
on every level, especially as a satire, so ... why do I like it? I enjoy the two beauties, yes, but
there is also Ralph Bates' droll delivery and his contempt for everyone whom he views in terms
of potenital body parts should the need arise. I don't know what, but the film's got something.

My guess is that it's something that's been in the can for 8 years or more. Or maybe he was reached by a medium during a seance... That would be sort of fitting for somebody associated with Hammer. 🙂

My copy of Horror of Frankenstein came in from Shout! yesterday, and I watched it last night. This was my first time seeing this movie, and while I did miss Peter Cushing in the role of Baron Frankenstein, I did enjoy Ralph Bates' performance. It started out a bit slow, but I thought the last 30 minutes were a lot of fun.

I thought the Blu-ray looked and sounded really good. It defaults to the 1.85 version, and the 1.66 version is found under the bonus features. Unlike The Reptile and Lust for a Vampire, which had a lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 mono track on their 1.66 versions, the 1.66 version of Horror of Frankenstein uses the same DTS-HDMA 2.0 Mono track that the 1.85 version uses.

That sounds so illogical, instead of accessing the same lossless audio that's on the main version. Some of these label decisions are perplexing.

Received mine today, finally, from Amazon. Do not think I will be able to get to it today though, can't wait to watch it. It is one of the very few Hammer horror films that I have not seen yet, and hell, I am 63 years old, lol.
