I downloaded the NIN album in HQ wav format 24bit/96kHz, but the only thing that plays it is my computer. I have an Oppo, but it nor the PS3 plays them natively. I'm thinking that I have to convert them to DVD-a format and then can play them on the Oppo. Is there a way to play them (in hd) on the PS3?

I downloaded a trial version of DVD Audio Solo from their website. It converted them to DVD audio files and burned to a dvd. Played back on my Oppo with no problems. No way to play them on the PS3 unless you downconvert them.

I made a DVD of them using my macbook that I played back on my PS3 and I don't believe they got downconverted.
I just used the graphics supplied for each song for the video. Still wish I liked NIN... I keep trying but can't see any value in thier stuff except for the soundtrack to Quake .... I liked that and haven't heard anything else they were involved in that I can listen too. EDIT - I can't remember where I put the disc but I bet the PS3 could tell me what the audio portion was and therefore confirm that I processed it right... maybe I'll look for my copy (hope I didn't throw it out.) Edited again- Found my copy ... the slip... I'm going to go see what the PS3 says the audio format is. -Brian Last edited by bhampton; 03-13-2009 at 10:11 PM. |

Hey,
Looks like I was incorrect... I guess I did downconvert the files. When I made the disc it didn't seem to re render so I thought it came out right but the PS3 claims it has 48Khz 1.5Mbs or something like that. Listening to it again though reminded me that I didn't care.... maybe someday... -Brian |

I'm not keen on The Slip either, but I did just acquire a copy of Pretty Hate Machine on vinyl and it is fantastic. I like everything up to With Teeth, the 5.1 DualDisc of that is 24/48 and an excellent disc altogether.
Year Zero and The Slip, I just can't get into them. The only way to play 24/96 2.0 files is to burn them as a DVD-Video, but I'm not aware of any software to do that. The Oppo plays DVD-A discs and so DVD Audio Solo will be creating the disc with the files in the AUDIO_TS folder. You should see if there are any other options if you must play them with the PS3, but the quality won't improve over the Oppo. |

I thought wav was pcm? If you rip a music cd to your computer uncompressed it is stored as a wav file so if not the same, they are damn close. Now what I think your talking about is taking a 24bit/96kHz wav file and converting it to 24bit/96kHz PCM so that the PS3 can play it? I don't think you could do it with DVD but maybe a blu-ray...I don't know much about the blu-ray audio spec.

With regard to the 24/96 quality tracks, I would suggest a Blu-ray based authoring solution.
The last couple versions of the Adobe Production Studio (CS3 and CS4) have had Blu-ray authoring built in. Still, it seems like a lot of work and expense (BD-R blanks aren't exactly cheap) just to get 24/96 audio to work in something like a PS3. It would be nice if the PS3 had some improved handling of music files from attached devices. For one thing, I would like to see some support for FLAC lossless and Apple lossless music tracks. The lossless support would come in handy for folks like me who have fairly large libraries of store bought CDs. I recently bought a 1TB external hard disc to use in backing up all of my CDs -roughly 400 or so discs. I ended up only using about 1/5 of the 1TB device's hard disc real estate. Still, with lossless support the user could append meta-data, like artist, album name, image thumb nails, etc. Using CD-quality WAV files, you're pretty much stuck with the song title alone and using twice the hard disc space that you should be using. |
