Default No more 50 inch 85u Panasonic at my local stores

So Best Buys or Bernies no longer have the panasonic 85u 50 inch only the 80u should I settle for the 80u or is the 85u so much better that I should consider buying online say from BH Photo or anyone else. Would buying the 80u be that drastic of a downgrade over the 85u or am I just hung up on the specs that don't vary by much. Or should i just wait for 09 models. Don't want to spend more than 1500 so an expensive super spec'ed out 09 model won't entice me I'm more price driven these days.

I ran into the same problem.............I wanted the 50" 50U, and was looking around quite a bit to get it and pretty much decided I was going to have to order it online. I went into BB to look and they had a new 0U with a manufacture date of January 09. I read extensively around the various forums and came to this conclusion.......Yes maybe the 50U is a better set technically, but several users of the two sets couldn't discern a better black level between the two. (I read a bunch of stuff on AVS) After I read Brett Day's review of the set and others on AVS forum, I decided to pull the trigger on the set at BB. That way I could just get it and take it home. No shipping or waiting.......I could have gotten it a bit cheaper online, but it was worth it to pay just a tad bit more to buy it in my hometown. It was listed for 1399 on amazon. I told the manager that I could get it shipped to my house for around 1400 bucks. He said they don't match online stores, but that he would reduce it to 1474.00...........so I took it. (after swearing I would never make a major purchase from BB) I have been tickled pink with this set. My advice would be don't hesitate to buy the 0U, it is a great set!

Congrats on the new HDTV!!! It's a great one! I did the same with my Pioneer 5020's , I got them at Best Buy even though they were cheaper online. There worth a lot more than I paid that's for sure!

not that this matters much unless you live in md but our CC up here has the 58/50 85's for 35% off msrp.

I think they came to like 1400 and 1600 something like that.

Yeah the -800U stock seems to be disappearing quite rapidly from all stores.

You can still get a PDP-5020FD for $1949 though, which is also a fantastic deal.
