What "K" will you draw the line at?

What K will you draw the line at and say, "Shiny and new, I am defiantly going to rip money out of my wallet just to get the new resolution before everybody else!"

10K? 16K? 32K? 64K?

4k is going to quickly start to go the way of the dinosaur, because there will be 8k content soon!

Many classic animation collections' Blu-rays are still 1080p only.

Let's hope Disney understands copyright reform (rather than extension) with this upgrade, because my fellow animation buffs are NAGGING to get their classic shorts in higher quality.

4K is already as good or better than what you see at most cinemas. No reason to upgrade anytime soon.

Plain 1080p on a Blu-ray disc is good enough for me. I am willing to settle for DVD if they ever quit making Blu-ray.

I think Blu-ray 1080p seems to be the sweet spot for the kinds of films that I like to collect (cult films). All of the boutique labels seem to be sticking with this format for now and I won't make the switch until they do. After all, labels like Blue Underground, Scream Factory, and Synapse are what got me into Blu-ray in the first place. Otherwise, I would have been content to stay with the DVD format. 4K doesn't seem to be the format for cult films, but I guess we will have to see what happens in the next couple of years.

I draw the line at "$300 'K'". So long as I can buy a TV for $300 or less then I will upgrade regardless of perceivable differences.

me too! It's time to "finalize" collections and stick to an acceptable and pleasing standard. Blu rays in both 2k and 4k are so much better than ANYTHING I've ever experienced before that this should do it.

The way things are going, I don't think people are really going to have much of a choice anyway in regards to physical media.

Resolutions higher than 4K won't benefit any existing movies, the cameras they used didn't capture any more detail. There won't be anything to upgrade.

But new movies in a couple decades could certainly be filmed in higher resolutions. I would gladly buy new movies on 8K Blu-ray, 16K Blu-ray... 128K Blu-ray (or another disc format).

Anything beyond 4k is probably more than anyone could benefit from on screen sizes available to the average consumer. Hell, I've seen standard Blu-ray discs of mediocre transfers projected in an actual theater, and the image more than held up to my picky pedantic pixel-peeping scrutiny. I've even seen DCP's from old 1080p HDTV masters projected 66-feet wide, from the second or third row, and the image still held up.

There may be a need for display resolutions to be greater than 4K, take VR and glasses-free 3D for example. I can see VR delivering the IMAX theatre experience at home in the future. I can't see a format needing to deliver more than 4k though, upscaling for display resolution higher than 4k will be fine.

8k. The highest you can scan 35mm films before it starts looking worse is around 8k

I'm still at 1080p. 4K looks great but I'm done upgrading my movies. Been doing that since VHS. I'll buy a 4K TV eventually for live sports and streaming.

I recently upgraded to 4k and honestly I'm not sure it was worth the investment. Some stuff looks great but you really have to do your research to find discs worth the premium. I upgraded both my projector (120" screen) and my TV (55" screen), and the OLED technology on the TV seems a more significant upgrade than 4k itself.

We've already decided that we aren't going to buy 4k versions of movies we already have on blu, with occasional exceptions for beloved favorites, and that means we are not going to be buying many 4k discs except for new theatrical releases.

What projector/screen do you use? Which TV do you use? Sound like it’s the limitation of the equipment that makes the upgrade not perceivable to you.

8K is pretty much the limit for most typical houses.

For ~3000 sqrft houses, the living rooms are typically ~15-20 feet width. At that distance ~100-150 inch screen is possible. more than 8K would be unnecessary at 150 inch.

From there, Resolution won't get bigger until HOUSES get bigger.

Though, of course I'm still hoping for 8K @ 4:4:4..

Maybe they'll sell masters on 3-6TB HDDs, for ~ $200 per movie, seems fair.

No way in hell am I buying my collection all over again. My blu rays look GREAT on my 75 inch Tv....

2TB for a master quality is needed for HD. 8TB for 4K and 32TB needed for 8K. The cost of hard drive alone is far more than $200.
