Default RLJ Entertainment (Image) MOD releases

Well, it looks like RLJ Entertainment (Image) is going the BD-R (burned) MOD route as well.

Lame. I bought Housewife on DVD since they hadn't announced a Blu. At least it's a pressed disc. I wonder if it's been released on a proper Blu in another region...

Is BD-R going to be the common thing now, for less popular titles?

A part of me wonders/believes that the future of physical media will be BD-R for better or worse. I don't necessarily want to purchase BD-R's, but I wouldn't have a huge problem with them if they were priced accordingly. $10 - $12 BD-R's are fine in my book, but when you ask more than that the cost/value just isn't as apparent.

I don't see why BD-Rs are priced so much more than a pressed disc. They have to produce more and assuming a "normal" BD costs more to buy than a blank BD-R at any store, those savings should be passed along to customer. Pressed discs being cheaper than BD-R makes no sense.

On a per-disc level, BD-Rs ARE more expensive. You can just manufacture a smaller number of them, so the total cost is lower. It's shortsighted and foolish, in my opinion, for studios of this size to be using BD-R. Microbudget indies? Sure. Lionsgate and Image? Ridiculous. Sony wised up, I hope these guys do too.

They should follow Warner Archive, Universal, and Sony’s (current) model of just small print runs of pressed discs (and do another small batch when they sell out and so on). I don’t see how it would be that difficult. Once upon a time, Image used to be one of the best indie labels in the days of LaserDisc and DVD. What happened?

Even if BD-R was cheaper, my guess is the majority (not serious collectors) don't know the difference. As a company you would increase profits keeping prices as-is, while decreasing the liability of having too much stock. Which I think is more of a survival tactic at this point because if overall sales are decreasing, you need to balance it out somewhere. Which I've come to accept because at this point I think we're either getting this or nothing. All that to say, I'm glad they're at least doing something and giving people options. Better than nothing.

I get some companies doing this and I do own a decent amount of RLJ/Image material but do they have the library for this to be a success for them?

And as someone who does own some stuff from them I know a few titles I wouldn't mind having in HD

What do y’all think of a preorder for presses discs guarantee. Run Out Groove does it with records in a way. They offer a few choices, you vote, the winner gets pressed. But they only make what’s ordered plus a percent to cover defects/damages. They’re comparably priced to other boutique label records, even less expensive than many.

I think it's important to message these companies and then let them know your stance on BD-R, because it's doubtful they frequent these forums. If people buy the DVD instead because it's a pressed disc they might incorrectly assume people are more interested in DVD than Blu and if no one buys any copies they'll take that to mean the film itself is not interesting folks so they won't get similar films in the future.

I had a suggested post on FB about Chasing Molly and it said it you could buy or rent it on DVD, Blu-ray or On Demand... so I commented and said "BD-R? Nah, maybe if it had been a "real" pressed disc. Might rent it though based solely on Felicia Day being in it." lol

I just went on their website to try and find an email address to let them know how disappointed I am that a very good film like Housewife is relegated to BD-R.. but all I found is phone numbers. Anyone know an email address?

I don't really want to try and call if I don't have to.

You can purchase from Bull Moose although they don't have stock at the moment.

or MovieZyng which shows stock:
