Im looking to replace my trusty ol LN40A550. Im looking at two TVs right now, the Sammy LN46A650, or the Sony KDL-46Z4100/B. Which one would be the better buy? The sony is on sale at BB for 1500, while the sammy is 1800 (i live in alaska so no buying from amazon and such).

That's a tough choice. Both are excellent tv's. I would think the Sammy has the edge, but I don't know if its worth the extra $300. You may want to consider waiting a few weeks for THIS Sony and compare it to the Samsung since they are roughly the same price. You may also want to consider THIS new model Panasonic if there's a Sears near you. I don't see this up on the Best Buy site yet, but this TV is better than either of those LCD's you are considering. Also look at THIS and THIS. These are Panasonic's last year models which are still better TV's than those LCD's and at better prices.

Even if you add $300 you're still talking the same price range...$1500 for the 46" I suggested and $1800 for the other two. Keep in mind that all of those TV's will give you a superior picture too. That's especially the case with the newest model.

What about driving down to the lower 48 (or even Canada if you can get by customs?) and getting one. It seems that the drive would be less than the mark-up that you guys up there in Alaska have to pay. Maybe its a "tax" on the oil windfall checks you all receiver up there?

I think it is absolutely crazy to settle for a TV when you are spending the same or more than front projectors like this Sanyo z7000, 1080p front projector for $1599 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...s=Sanyo%20Z700
Size matters dude You can focus a front projector to the exact size the room can handle from a few feet to over 10 feet. |

As you move down the line, they give you less options and lower the processing. Having said all that, whether you personally will see any real difference in a "W", "Z", or "XBR" after calibration is up for debate. If money is no object and you can get a good deal, go for the XBR. Between the Z and W, I personally would go for the W series....you get most bang for the buck here. I know someone who owns the 52" W and the picture rocks. In the OP's case, I would save the $300 and buy the Sony and then put that amount towards a Blu-Ray player if he doesn't already own one. |
