Damn, this is terrific! I still need to get the previous one, but will probably pick this up along with this at the same time.

It looks to me as if they're trying to get as much of series four together as possible. That makes sense considering it's the series with the most missing episodes. Whether or not that means they're looking to release this series in its entirety sometime in the not too distant future or if they just wanted to plug the biggest gap I'm not sure, but it's certainly nice to be getting more and more of my favourite Doctor!

If they can get both Marco Polo and the Crusade animated, that gives us Seasons 1 and 2 complete.

Another of my most wanted missing stories animated. Easily my most watched Loose Canon recon, very much looking forward to this.

Make me a very happy fan and do the Myth Makers next please BBC.

EDIT:

Not due until 2020 apparently: https://www.doctorwho.tv/news/?artic...to-be-released

As the entire story is animated, I hope the actual episodes are still included somewhere on the set.

What do you mean, the actual episodes? If they had the actual episodes, no need to make the animated versions, right?

Episode 1 and 3 exist. They will definitely be on there. I imagine the B&W version will be 4:3 to fit with the existing episodes.

The Macra Terror includes four different ways to view the serial (five if you count the audio commentaries), the original inferior sound quality Colin Baker narrated audio release and the surviving footage. There's no reason to believe this release will not follow the same completist model.

Good idea but I'd presume it'll probably cost too much to do even four of the six episodes in two separate picture ratios, especially if composing shots to look good in both 4:3 and 16:9. Like Macra Terror it's a safe bet that the colour animation will the default and superior version anyway.

This is great news. Since i have complete sets of all doctors with all audio and video-photo reconstructions, and the surviving scattered episodes of the 1st two doctors. Its nice to know this can be all done eventually. This will be great when they start doing 1st & 2nd Doctor Blu-ray season sets. I hope Marco Polo, and The Crusade are next on the list to animate.

They probably feel it would be an easier watch if all the parts were animated as opposed to going animated, original, animated.

They're going for the BBC America audience, and BBC America want colour. I don't really mind so long as the original live action eps are still on there. Some people had been worried that the policy might mean they would avoid stories with one or two existing episodes, which is now clearly not the case, making the likes of Evil of the Daleks, Wheel in Space and Abominable Snowmen viable and likely.

What "easier" is there??!! Priority should be to include all original episode that exist and insert animated episode where the episode is missing. Why animate an episode that exists? Any existing footage or episodes of the missing stories should be used as Templates as to how to animate the rest of the story.

But that's not what they're doing, as Macra Terror made clear. They're essentially recreating them as modern animations for a modern audience, not slavish recreations of the limited resources of an old B&W 60s show.
The extant episodes will no doubt be included as an option, so I've no idea why people are whining about it.

Priority should be to compile releases with maximum sales potential. Sales of previous releases have shown that Classic Who DVDs containing straight 4:3 black and white animated recons are a hard sell to all but the completist/hardcore/knowledgeable fans. As such they tried a new model with Power and Macra which turned out to be decent sellers, hence the choice to continue with widescreen colour partial re-imaginings. It would also be interesting to know how much of their success is down to them being made available in true HD on blu-ray.

To get back to the release in question of course upscales of episodes 1 and 3 will be included.

That's correct. I hope the blu-rays allow branching because top priority should be given to the actual episodes themselves before the animated ones. To not do this makes the whole point of releasing DW episodes pointless. I mean you might as well animate every episode from 1963-1989.

I had already thought before The Macra Terror was released that they may consider animating existing episodes but at the time I thought only The Evil of the Daleks and The Wheel in Space might be possible (due to Daleks and Cybermen being a pull).

The funding from BBC America apparently only comes with the condition that the story is entirely animated. So the whole thing couldn't happen without it.

Hopefully The Macra Terror was such a success and The Faceless Ones has good pre-orders in order for them to run straight into The Evil of the Daleks afterwards and we won't have to wait quite as long for that one.

In full colour 16:9 HD, sell the broadcast and streaming rights and make a nice healthy profit to plough into future projects. Sounds like a good idea to me.
