Default Long-Absent Directors You'd Like to See Working Again

The reasons vary - some retire (Béla Tarr), others prefer to do documentaries (Walter Salles) or TV and other kinds of art (David Lynch), while some just plain disappear (Stephen Sommers).

There are those who had a string of failures and seemingly couldn't overcome them (Martin Brest, Richard Kelly), or returned to their homeland (Jan De Bont, who served as cinematographer in a Dutch documentary in 2012), or have problems getting something made (Todd Field).

And there are those who just take their sweet time preparing their next projects (I assume Bennett Miller fits here).

That doesn't mean their fans, or people just interested in their work, don't yearn for their return.

Personally, I'd love to see Frank Darabont making another movie. His last one was The Mist, released almost 12 years ago.

What about you? Who do you miss?

George Lucas, more than anyone. But if he wants to enjoy his retirement, fine

I also miss Paul Verhoeven and John Woo making movies in Hollywood.

David Fincher's last film was five years ago, and that's far too long!

John McTiernan, hasn't done anything since 2003. We need him back to give us proper Predator, and Die Hard films.

He was keeping busy in federal prison. Guess lying to the FBI doesn't do much for your career!!

You can watch his recent work on the Netflix show Mindhunter. But I agree, it would be nice to see a new Fincher film in theaters again.

I LOVED Foxcatcher. One of my top films of 2014. It's a crime there hasn't been a new Bennett Miller film since.

John Carpenter. If he had Directed Halloween 2018, I wonder how different it would have been, especially if he had full control and the studio gave him free reign

Fred Dekker. I know he co-wrote The Predator, but I want to see him directing again. Other people need to accept some of the responsibility for Robocop 3.

It depends how good the finished product is. Not that I'm not all for the rehabilitation of ex-convicts!

Definitely Martin Brest. He didn't have a string of failures, he had one underperformer (MEET JOE BLACK that did fairly well on the home video market at the time) and one massive bomb (GIGLI). But he's gifted us to some good to great films in his career (SCENT OF A WOMAN, MIDNIGHT RUN, BEVERLY HILLS COP, and the original GOING IN STYLE). Not to mention he's only 67 now. But from everyone I've talked to, we don't know if it's so much about him not being able to get a film financed now as it is he hasn't been interested after the beating he took for GIGLI.

No, it absolutely does not. That's why you keep your mouth closed. You can't lie that way.

And yes, Fincher does have the Netflix series, but I agree that I would love to see another film from him. He's one of my favorites.

Not long ago I would have said Soderbergh, but that doesn't apply anymore, obviously.

I can't really think of anyone off the top my head though. I wish Favreau would direct something in which I had some interest, but I know that's not what you're asking about.

John Waters. It's been fifteen years since his last feature film.

John Dahl.

Dahl directed some terrific films: RED ROCK WEST, THE LAST SEDUCTION, ROUNDERS and JOY RIDE. He still directs for TV, but I'd love to see him make another movie.
