I use this site just for fun BUT for an advid collector I use Collectorz.com Movie Collector. I have over 700 DVDs and possibly 70 + Blus.
With that kind ofvolume I needed a program that kept all the data a movie can have. I also use a scanner with the program to scan in the bar code. Love it. |

Me too..... apparently my brain isn't that efficient though, as I have purchased DVDs from Best Buy before (used to buy the majority there), and gotten home only to find out I already owned it
![]() I began to type them up in Excel once for "insurance" purposes.... and after awhile I realized I was wasting my time, and snapped some pictures...... I'll just tell the insurance company "hey I had about this many, at about $XX.XX each..... " you really don't need to be terribly accurate with the insurance company.... they don't ask questions unless it REALLY STINKS of fraud. |

I imagine it does, because the program I use has updated it's database for BD barcodes, so I imagine most of them have as well. The scanner itself can be pretty cheap. Amazon has some used CueCat scanners for $1.99 (it's a USB thing shaped somewhat like a cat... kind of stupid, I guess the idea was to play off the idea of a mouse). I remember getting one for free in the mail, from some random company (I think the goal was to start using coupons online, or something). I'm not sure how well it works, because I use a different program (Delicious Library, which uses the built-in-cameras on iMacs and MacBooks).

About 3-4 years ago I started typing up every movie I saw into a spreadsheet on Excel. For every movie I fill in the name, year it was released, rating, the country it was produced in, the day I first saw it, how long it was, and the genre. Then I add my own rating, and pull down the ratings from various sites (IMDb, FilmAffinity, RottenTomatoes), and then do a simple average.
Over time I've expanded on it quite a bit. I developed some really strange formula to rank the movies, based on the various ratings it has (the more ratings it has the higher it's ranked... so a movie with four reviews, averaging 3 stars, will rank below a movie with five reviews, averaging 3 stars). Later on I added a whole bunch of graphs and charts showing the Ratings (PG, PG-13, etc), decades they were released in (just to get an idea of how many movies I've seen from each decade), and the countries they're from (something like 90-95% are from the US, surprise surprise). Finally, I have the movies sorted a few different ways on various sheets. One is just every movie I've seen, ranked by the score it received after running it through my magic formula. The second just limits that to the top 250 movies (but I eliminate documentaries, mini-series, etc). The third ranks the top 25 from each decade and compares the average ratings from each decade (which I think proves to me that the 70s was the best decade in history for movies). About 2 years ago I added in all the nominees for what I consider the "important" Oscars (picture, director, actor/actress, supp. actor/actress, and screenplays), and keep a running count of the % I've seen (26%) and of the amount of Best Picture winners I've seen (61%). Some of the random statistics I keep track of are the average runtime of a movie (surprisingly it's at 119 minutes, which keeps to that old cliche that movies are 120 minutes long), the average year (I think it's at 1987 now) and the total number of minutes of the movies watched (which I then represent in # of days, in # of years, minutes per day, and as a % of my life -- thanks to a formula which keeps track of how many days old I am -- which is a haunting statistic to look at). Despite all that, I never bothered to put the movies I own anywhere into the spreadsheet. Last edited by toef; 02-23-2009 at 11:20 PM. |

I use something pretty basic to keep track of my collection: Microsoft Excel. I also have the luxury of webhosting, so I keep a copy of it on my server at all times for access from my mobile phone when I'm out. I've also created a wishlist tab as well. I keep an Excel and PDF version.

I keep a collection here; but I also use Excel to keep one on my hard drive at home and online on my own webspace.
I've added stats and facts to my collections over time too. I particularly keep track of how much the collection is worth, and how many discs/SKUs/movies/episodes are in it. |
