Default Something I don’t understand about soccer.

Why is there an offsides rule in soccer?

Imagine if there was a rule in the NFL where the quarterback wasn’t allowed to throw the ball to a receiver if the receiver was past every defender.

...that would be a very different game.

It started in the 19th century, to stop players "sneaking" near the opposing goal and waiting for a pass.

Honestly, It made no sense to me at first when I got to know the offside rule but if you look at it and analyze it helps the game become more beautiful and competitive. with no offside rule, most clubs would force their players to stick to the opposite side's keeper hoping to receive a lob pass to score and this would ruin the beauty of the game as it would be too easy if the lob pass is successful the attacker would have a one-on-one chance. hence to make it more competitive which makes it more beautiful I believe that the offside rule was invented.

You've not heard of Rugby?

US football does effectively have an offside rule though doesnt it due to the focus on restarts with short phases of play, you have to be behind the ball for that, if you could just stand anywhere you wanted that would be a very different game.

So they don't just leave some dude up there, bugging the goalie and waiting for long passes for easy goals.
