is there any way to play games or watch blu-ray movies
on my ps3 from the uk or japan, there are a few movies i want to buy from the uk and japan

PS3 games are region free. Disc PSone/PS2 games aren't. All PlayStation Store games are region free including PSone games.

DLC for games is nearly always restricted to the matching region of game.

I am pretty sure you should have no problem with games but movies on the other hand have to be the right region code.

Any idea of if/when a region free software update for movies will be made? If games are region free, it follows that it shouldn't be too complicated for films to be as well.

I highly doubt they would do this.
