I prefer the extended version. I really enjoyed Conan's speech talking about his path in life.

The Australian version is the one to get at the moment. There's also an OOP and expensive French steelbook of both films that is identical to the Australian version. |

From dvdcompare.net about blu ray from UK, the notes here:
The disc plays the UK cut version on a Region B machine set to display the BD/DVD menu in English (the likely UK set-up). To play the uncut version on a Region B machine, on the PLAYER, set the BD/DVD menu language to be one of the others listed in the audio/subs above (not all have been tested but, so far, all work.) If you select a language not listed above (e.g. German) then the menu language defaults to English and you get the cut version again. Independent of the menu display language, you have access to all audio/sub options. (The packaging only lists English audio/subs.) |

I can confirm, this Australian blu-ray release is indeed region free. As is their blu-ray release of Conan the Destroyer. I own them both, live in the US and don't have an all-region player.

The Australian release is region free, but it is also not the US theatrical cut. It's the "extended international cut," which is essentially the international cut, but with one extra scene of Conan and Subotai.
AFAIK, the US theatrical cut is not available anywhere on Blu-ray, but it is available digitally (at least in the US), and it shows up on streaming sites and cable TV periodically. |

I saw Conan the Barbarian recently at the Alamo Drafthouse. It was great to see on the big screen with a sold out audience. They did show the U.S. theatrical cut, which I hadn't seen for years. I really missed those additions present in the extended international version. That's definitely my preferred version.

The Australian disc plays the uncut international version on a region A player btw, so no need to fiddle with language settings there.
The US disc is shorter than the other releases by about a minute, as one scene is missing, so it's some kind of hybrid cut between the original US theatrical and International cuts. As far as I know it hasn't been corrected either, so there's missing music and a day-for-night filter issue in the scene where Conan runs away from the wolf pack. Australian and Italian versions have these issues corrected, and also include a Dolby Digital 1.0 mono track for the audio purists. |

The main reason I sort of prefer the theatrical cut is the music "correctly" times to soar when Conan throws the lamp into Doom's temple and the flames rise.
It just isn't the same in the extended cuts. |
