LG SK4D sound bar?

We picked up the SK4D sound bar at the same time we upgraded our TV to an LG OLED. It seemed like a no-brainer improvement over the small Yamaha one we used previously, where the subwoofer was built into the receiver. This LG sound bar is plugged into the optical port of the LG TV.

We haven't been able to get it to sound right, though. Often the quiet parts are too quiet and the loud parts are too loud. It reminds me of one of my early DVD players where I had to go in and reduce the dynamic range to fix the very same issue, except this doesn't have any such setting as far as I can tell. In fact, it doesn't have many settings at all. There are basically three modes:

1) An auto mode where it chooses the "best" settings based on your input.
2) A bass boost setting.
3) A cinema setting.

None of them sound quite right, but the auto mode is probably the best as long as you use the "Bass+" button to increase the bass above what it automatically set.

I thought maybe since it was plugged into the TV via the optical port I should mess with audio settings on the TV itself, but no luck there either.

I haven't found a whole lot on this bar, just curious if anyone has any experience with it or any suggestions on optimizing it?

I may have found a possible solution while searching around more after making this original post. The sound bar as a "night mode" which, apparently, reduces the dynamic range. Time to experiment.

Soundbars have limited adjusting functions, and you may have to keep experimenting with it, until you get the sound that you like the best. Soundbars are not like a A/V receiver when you have numerous equalizer controls, preset soundfields, and other various options that the listener can choose from.
