Default Close scare with receiver

Hey fellas.

I had a heart-stopping moment last night when I was putting my equipment back in the HT. I was rerouting some wires in the rear of the receiver (Onkyo 806), while it was on. I pulled off the sub cable to reroute it and it slipped from my hands and crossed against the banana plugs for the speakers. It made a weird sound an the receiver turned off. I tried turning it back on to no avail, but finally got it to work after unplugging the receiver, then plugging it back in.

Lesson learned to all of us is to make sure stuff is turned off when performing even the smallest tasks.

Is my receiver okay or did I really screw something up. I watched a movie after and didn't encounter any issues.

Thank you,
Mike

its not really a lesson learned when it tells you to not even plug the receiver in when hooking it up. you never do this, common sense also tells you this.

Well, it's common sense for those of us who've been dealing with equipment for years but many are never told, many just don't read manuals... even static electricity can cause an arc and blow a circuit in the piece. It is a basic rule but some forget... they're in a hurry... I've seen installers do the same thing but it is a good lesson, that's for sure.

You can make this argument for many things we do, but folks don't heed due to complacency or convenience. For me this was a lesson learned, for others.......maybe not. As a noob myself, I was only looking out for others by sharing this story......not seeking out a sarcastic comment.

I was, however, seeking out a comment on whether my receiver was harmed by this slip up.

Cheers.

i wasnt making a sarcastic remark, I was simply telling you that it is in black and white and bold letters, NOT to turn a amplifier or receiver on when hooking it up.

same with anything: I dont do repairs to eletrical in my house with it on, I dont work on a car motor with it running, I dont stick my hand in a garbage disposal with the power going to it, i dont pee on a electrified fence. etc..

Im just stating the facts, if you learned a lesson, thats great but dont expect me or anyone else to accept a reason that "many are never told" because you are in the manual.

Oh okay.......so the shot about common sense wasn't. Dude this is my post and I was just asking if anyone thought my receiver suffered damage.

If you don't have a reply to my only question, then there's no value added posting here. I'm not the only one who thought your comment was off, so do us all a favor.....

as to the question if your receiver was damaged, I'd pm one of the sound mods...prerich, cracks...,big daddy. Click on forum leaders for list;

seems like if it is working with no issues you may have dodged a bullet. But I'd wouldn't mind a more expert opinion to reassure me if that happened to any of my HT

You might not know, if there was any damage unless you test out every feature.

About a year and a half ago, in the winter, when the house was dry, warm and staticky, I reached for the remote control that was sitting on top of one of the components connected to the AVR, not even the receiver itself. Power was already on to the receiver. A received a vicious static electricity shock, and the receiver when inot PROTECT mode and shut off. After a few minutes, everything powered back up and seemed to work fine, but the autocalibrate feature (for the speakers) never again worked. I had to send it for service. This is not nearly so obvious as messing with connections when things are powered up. Nonetheless, I no longer store remotes near the electronics, and I no longer routinely use the panel controls on the electronics. If I need to, I always no remember to discharge myself before touching the equipment.

how do you discharge yourself? I've seen computer techs use some type of rubber mat that they have with them. something like that?

interesting story

Most receivers shut down out of protection so if it's back up and running, you haven't really done any harm. If you did... you'd know it!

There are several creative ways to do this:

Touch something metal, I use a filing cabinet at work before I touch anything electronic.

Touch your pets or childrens nose first (Has a Family Guy flashback)

They sell for a few bucks a grounding clip/strap connected to a wristband for working on electronics or for a few bucks more one w/o a cord which contains a battery which discharges static from you.

Here is a pic of one with the strap http://www.amazon.co.uk/Static-Elect.../dp/B000Q8HA5E.

Here is one w/o cord. http://www.batteryspace.com/index.as...OD&ProdID=3575

The best way to avoid static buildup is to regulate the amount of humidity in the room. Winter is typically the worst time of year for static. A humidifier is the best way to add water into the air.

If a receiver is in standby mode but not switched on, can a static electricity discharge from one's body upon touching the chassis harm the electronics? That's happened to me a couple of times to my receiver and to my Sony S350 BD player. They seem to operate ok though.

Your receiver is probably OK. I have done far worse things with my computers and home theater equipment and I am not a noob. Even if your receiver is off, you have to be careful when you mess with the subwoofer cables. The subs have their own power supply and make this awfull humming sound. Make sure everything is unplugged when you rearrange the wires.

Moderators notified of your childish and offending PM to me.

You have resorted to name calling and comments to belittle me over PM, while I have done nothing for you to cause disrespect towards me.

Also, I'm not your boy either. I have honorably served my country for 13 years in the military, along with deploying to the mid-east. I am more of a man than some and proudly risk my life for YOU or anyone else.......unwaverly.
