RESPONSE TO RANT: Maybe so, but J.K. herself said that Azkaban had something put in the movie that gave her chills, because it foreshadowed something in the last book, something no one else could have known.

Blu-Ray and hd-dvd are two different things!!! The Blu-ray version CAN'T be hobbled by the limitations of a rival format.

That bad part is I already own the first 4 Harry Potter movies on DVD. I don't know that I could spend 150 when i really would only want the 5th one.

In case you aren't being sarcastic

VC-1 can be used on either BR or HD, and since HD has less space, they have to lowest common denominator it if they're saving money by using the same compression (which Warner always does)

My wife wants me to wait for the whole boxset to come out. I think that will be in 2010. I'll buy it if WB does a good job for Blu-ray (Loseless audio proper encoding, 50 gig discs etc, all the goodness that BD has to offer ) If not.... I will be very disappointed. Oh shit... I hope it's not released on that ungodly Total Hidef disc!!!

Total HD would be fine as long as it's the same as if you had separate discs. It would be the ultimate in flexability.

It can be. Given HD DVD's space and bandwidth limitations, it's possible (probably even) that a studio that intends to release on both formats will cater to the needs of the least capable format, in this case HD DVD. So, the Blu-ray version could well be stuck using a lower bitrate, and would therefore be lower quality than if a Bllu-ray-specific encode had been done.

For the best PQ and AQ, each format should receive its own encode: HD DVD limited to 30GB and Blu-ray limited to 50GB. WIth almost twice as much space to play with, the Blu-ray version would have much more potential.

Dunno about you, but I *like* screen-printed artwork on the non-playing side of my disks. TotalHD would (out of necessity) do away with that. And why cater to a format that'll be pushing up the daisies RSN?

This year's 5-film set will have actual BDs not THDs. As for the 7-film set that's almost certainly coming out in the future, chances are it will have real BDs too since there's no way HD-DED will survive that long.

Any release date on the Harry Potter movies? I thought all the movies were going to be released this fall. Anyone know what is going on?

They haven't announced the release date for Harry Potter 5 on the DVD format yet, so I imagine when they do, that's going to be when we'll all hear about the Blu-ray editions.

Okey Dokey... Just curious if a release date had been set for the new movie on DVD as the reports on here were saying that all the movies will be released on blu-ray to coincide with the release of the Order Of The Phoenix on dvd...

Warner Bros. announced at the VSDA show in July that Harry Potter 1-5 were coming to Blu-Ray and HD DVD in November. I believe the only detail was the MSRP for the boxed set @ $150. Give it another month or so, and I'm sure WB will release all of the details.

Whenever they do come out they'll look great. Apparently the HD DVD looks fantastic.

Actually it's got some major artificating and macroblocking in shadows, hypothesis is because it's a little bit starved due to length and that there's a jillion dub tracks on it.

You can get the books, even in hardcover cheaply on Amazon marketplace. Read them and see the 50-60% of Goblet of Fire you're missing, the 60-70% of Order of the Phoenix, and I don't want to THINK about how much is going to be lopped from book 6. Seven has a lot of action so the cutting will be much less. (Action takes far more words than frames to tell)
