This was posted in the Arrow thread by dwk, so full credit goes to him, but I just wanted to make sure it doesn't get buried. Fran Simeoni, the director of Arrow, confirmed via twitter that they plan to bring their release of Elvira: Mistress of the Dark to the US eventually (also: No Heathers).

Presumably it'll be the same artwork as the UK release, and most likely the same extras too (though that may be what needs to be ironed out).

Nice option for those that don't have the UK Arrow release! I can hear the keyboards tapping of everyone canceling their RLJ preorders

I'm gonna keep my preorder just in case the Arrow version doesn't come out for a while.

What were the special features on the UK release? This is one of my favorite movies so I'm hoping it was packed.

I am going to buy the Arrow version, but may still buy the RJL version, just for shits & giggles. The RJL version is less than $9.

Thumbs up

I don't even know what RLJ stands for. I thought the disc coming out was from Image. Regardless, I have it preordered for under $9, and I'll keep it that way just in case things don't get "ironed out." But if an Arrow version does come, I'll double dip.

I canceled my RLJ order in light of this news.

I suppose I can always order it again for cheap if the Arrow release takes too long.

I'm REALLY looking forward to this but, for all those people saving ten bucks by cancelling their RLJ Image pre-orders, remember this: the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD thread ran for about 5 years with people not buying the Japanese BD because they were waiting for the Criterion BD.

I really hope the Arrow release shows up before Halloween but "coming stateside at some point" could mean anything.

I hope this doesn't turn into another NOTLD thread where it's 2023 and we have a 40 page thread with people saying, "I'm not buying the Image BD because I'm holding out for the Arrow disc" .

Or even worse, a Django situation.

The wait paid off with NOTLD though, didn’t it?

The Image release is likely to be bare bones and from an old master. We already know from the UK release what the Arrow release will be like. Plus Arrow are not like Criterion who sit on titles for years.

Did it?

I don't think so.

I bought BOTH the Japanese BD AND the Criterion BD.

The Japanese BD cost about $16 and I got five years of regular viewing pleasure from watching it.

People who waited for five years saved $16.

If saving $16 over a five year period is worth it, then yes, the wait paid off. Personally, I enjoyed watching the Japanese BD during those five years.

But people have their own budgets and can set their own spending limits. I don't know what people's individual financial circumstances are. If anyone feels that saving $9.00 or $10.00 bucks on Elvira is worth the wait, I have no problem with that. Again, I only offer this as a cautionary tale...saving the price of a medium pizza betting on an unannounced BD release.

How do you know those people waiting for the Criterion BD of NOTLD didn't already own it on DVD? It's a public domain film for goodness sakes, it's not like it's hard to find if you wanted to simply watch the film. People who were waiting for the Criterion release were doing so because they knew the overall package that would be released would be superior and worth the wait.

Same with Elvira. Why waste money on a poor release when you know a better version is round the corner? If anyone is desperate to just simply watch the film, there are other ways to do that.

Arrow already released it in the UK, so if they just have to clear a few hurdles with the extras or movie rights, that's not going to take forever. I fully expect to see it released before year's end. It's not comparable to the NotLD situation at all, which I'm pretty sure is exaggerated anyway.

It's not like the RLJ/Image release is even out yet. It doesn't release till September, and who knows what it'll look like.

I think the key aspect here is wanting to own it on blu ray. Of course anyone can watch practically any movie on DVD or online or VHS or whatever. I wanted to own MARTIN on blu ray so I bought the Japanese release last year. It’s like an innate, biological drive to own a copy of a movie in a high-def format, even if we know there could or will definitely be a better release sometime in the future.

And the key aspect for others is to own it on a good blu-ray. Anyone who has already waited this long because they have been unwilling or unable to import Arrow's UK release can wait a little longer to purchase the US version that the director of content of the company says is coming. Why waste money on a version that is likely to be inferior when that cash could be spent on a different blu-ray, or that medium pizza that the other guy was talking about?

My under-$10 Blu is scheduled to arrive Wednesday, from Target via UPS. It will make a great outdoor October feature. I doubt Arrow's will be out next month, but I will certainly double-dip. Shouldn't be hard to make my money back on the Image version.

If they plan to truly release it this year, it will probably be in December, November if we're lucky.
