If you like The Thirteenth Warrior, you should definitely check out Seven Samurai directed by Akira Kurosawa; it's pretty much the same story, but I believe Kurosawa did it better.

Love the 13th Warrior. If it should come, it's a day 1 buy for me.

There is very little similarity. Thirteenth Warrior is playing more off the Scandinavian myths. The Seven Samurai does not hold the patent on "group of men" adventure stories.

The 13th Warrior with Antonio Banderas right? Saw it so long ago, but didn't give me the slightest impression to want to keep it as a remembered achievement.

True, the setting is different, but the basic plot is the same. In both films a peasant village recruits an outside band of heroes to defend the village against raiders. This story has been told numerous times on film; examples I know of include:

Battle Beyond the Stars
A Bug's Life
The Magnificent Seven
Samurai 7
Seven Samurai
Sholay
The Thirteenth Warrior
Three Amigos

13th Warrior was butchered by Michael Chrichton, who reshot many sequences and re-edited the whole original movie into something more "audience friendly".

I say it's time for a director's cut reissue ala Dark City Blu-Ray. Let's put both cuts onto the disc, and no double dip please. I don't care how long it will take, I want the director's cut the first time it's issued on Blu.

Anyone here agree ?

I think The 13th Warrior is awesome as is but I don't know what could have been with John McTiernan (spelling?). I thought the book was really good as well and I can see where the film could have been different.

I do not expect this film to reach Blu anytime soon if at all

It's not an exceptional adaptation of "Eaters of the Dead" (which IS a great read), but it would still be a release day purchase for me.

Yes, but this is the story concept of Beowulf (Northern European story/myth) , which came out a long time before all these films

Well if nothing else, Crichton's taking over meant that Jerry Goldsmith was brought on board (replacing Graeme Revell). That fact alone makes this movie worth checking out.

Other Crichton/Goldsmith collaborations: Pursuit, Coma, The Great Train Robbery, Runaway, Congo, Timeline.

Excellent point. I completely forgot about Beowulf in my previous post.

I don't have a problem with the same basic story being told multiple times (even in the same medium) as long as each instance is presenting a different take on the subject; I just found The Thirteenth Warrior too similar to Seven Samurai for my taste.

The characters played by Toshiro Mifune and Antonio Banderas are both outsiders trying to gain acceptance from a group of men who were born into a warrior class. In both movies the group is recruited to defend a village, the group goes to the village and is attacked, the group stages a raid on the enemy's lair, the survivors return to the village, and the final confrontation takes place in the rain.

If someone likes The Thirteenth Warrior and wants to see it on blu-ray, that's great. I hope it, as well as almost every other movie, will eventually be available on the format we all love. I would just like more folks to see Seven Samurai for what is, in my opinion of course, a better film treatment of the same general story.

Default amazons hint

i saw on amazon that they got a signup for people who want to be notified when 13thWarrior comes out in BlueRay. since they dont do this for every dvd they have, doesnt it mean 13thwarrior is coming out in Blue?
Oh, and i loved the movie btw, i think its sad some of the movies that are made blue if this one isnt, the mix of Arabic and Norse is very complex when you think about things going from fighting styles to how they were raised and taught and what they were taught. One is a society of logic and manners and the other is of myths and....no manners lol.
not to mention the fact it opend me up to Mead, a drink i never knew exsisted.
