I have been debating this for awhile now. While I love collecting movies and have built up a rather nice collection, I think it is time to move on. I just can no longer afford the shelf space (or money) to support $34.99 4K releases and the money spent throughout the year on movies I don't even watch but are between $2.99-9.99 on sale is really hurting the wallet as well. It's not a decision I take likely and not something I wanted to do but really need to save the money. Planning to move to a different state soon and need all the money for that. I will still be supporting the studios as I do quite often go to the movies whether it be premium IMAX, GDX, Regal RPX, Cinemark XD, Dolby Cinema, PLF, or standard viewing. I love watching movies and will still continue to watch as many as I can. I have invested in a really nice quality 4K Laptop as well to be able to watch my 4K movies on the go now as well. I would love some moral support from anyone who has recently made the switch as I could use it lol.

Do what is right for you and do not worry what anyone else, including me, thinks about your decision. My preference is beyond obvious and I will let that speak for itself, but I do want to say that I can not think of many instances where I ever paid $34.99 for a 4K disc; I very rarely spend more than $24.99 for a single movie on the 4K disc format. I often pay $19.99 or even less. I get the blu-ray AND the digital copy, too, for that price. You're either exaggerating the prices here or you were needlessly over paying.

If you buy digital from the people who bought physical copies, and are just re-selling them...your still supporting physical! Good for you. I hope your able to save up enough to reach your goal to move out of state. I’m currently working on that exact goal myself. Good luck.

As I said before, do what is in your best interests and have no regrets about it. Discs and steel books will still be here if you ever want them; you're not making an irrevocable choice. You only need to please yourself. Last edited by Vilya; 09-03-2019 at 05:06 AM. |

For whatever it's worth... As much as I enjoy the act of collecting, driving to stores and buying physical media... aside from a handful of things here and there, there is very little that I've ever actually re watched or gotten the urge to re watch. I sometimes wonder if the act of collecting is more enjoyable/addictive than actually watching this stuff.

Just sell all the bd's and use that to fund your digital collection. Just remember there are downsides to going all digital. Just cons and pros with both.
If you have any anime let me know. ![]() ![]() |

I have some rare finds on BD that I don't think I could ever get rid of (no anime tho sorry) but going forward It will be all digital. Most of my friends just use streaming services such as netflix or hulu so they don't even really care if a movie takes 5 months to watch. I literally have an entire Marvel steelbook collection but what really bit the bullet for me is when they released Iron Man collection and Thor all at once. I just don't got the money for that. I've invested in a payment plan option and got myself a nice 4K laptop. Will be in monthly payments with no interest. I have a 4k TV with 7.1 surround etc but I feel like I will need my own personal on the go now that I am going digital.

If the thrill of the hunt is what you enjoyed most, then hunting with a laptop's touchpad in search of a digital title is not going to be anywhere near as much fun. No steelbook trophy to display afterwards, either.
If you don't watch many of the discs that you buy, with their constant presence serving as a reminder, what makes you think that you will watch many of the digital copies that you buy? If it is the act of hunting and collecting that you enjoy the most, then you are sacrificing the aspect of this hobby that you like best just to save space and a few $. Kinda sounds likes a recipe for disappointment to me. Ready Player One is a fun movie, especially in 3D. The book is even better. Last edited by Vilya; 09-03-2019 at 05:57 AM. |

I only purchase movies that have a high replay value for me. Movies I know I will watch over and over. It doesn’t make sense (to me) to buy a movie, watch once, then have it collect dust while taking up valuable shelf space. |

Even if I only watch a movie once, the purchase was still worth it to me. Buying the movie and then watching it, and whatever extras there might be of interest, in the comfort of my own home AND at a lower price than what it would cost for two tickets to the theater is still a great bargain to me. I have better concessions also.
![]() If I buy a real turkey, I can attempt to resell it, regift it, donate it, use it for skeet practice, ceremoniously burn it, or keep it as a reminder of a bad choice made. I have lost far more gambling on new restaurants than I ever have with taking a chance on a movie. |

Shelf space did it for me, went Digital in 2008/09. Free upgrades to 4k was nice. iTunes are keeping movie extras live and well. 4k/HDR all the way.

[Show spoiler] Also didn't mean to upset anyone. Really could use some support as I've been collecting ever since my dad talked me into my first very own VHS player for my room . Last edited by blackwidowavenger1964; 09-03-2019 at 06:13 PM. |

I don't think that you have upset anyone, but when you ask for comments about a decision that you made on an internet forum, you have to expect that the replies will be varied. Again, be happy with your decision; you are doing what you deem to be best for you and that is all the validation that you need. Further, this choice, while hard for you, is rather inconsequential in that it is not irreversible. You can change your mind at any time as your situation evolves, or not, as you see fit. You can buy only digital, or only discs (like me ![]() ![]() Last edited by Vilya; 09-03-2019 at 06:29 PM. |

I think you will be alright, like you found out you won't get much for selling your Disc Collection. Just keep the ones that are near and dear to you. I still have many Discs and Back-ups, but went Digital in 2014 and haven't looked back. You can find the Digital Codes at good prices, but they have gone up. Just make sure you can access all the Streaming Providers like Amazon Prime, FN, MA, Vudu, and a lot more to come get ready for Disney+. No I think you will be fine, Collecting Discs are a thing of the past the Future is Streaming!
