Default Hard decision, but going all digital.

I have been debating this for awhile now. While I love collecting movies and have built up a rather nice collection, I think it is time to move on. I just can no longer afford the shelf space (or money) to support $34.99 4K releases and the money spent throughout the year on movies I don't even watch but are between $2.99-9.99 on sale is really hurting the wallet as well. It's not a decision I take likely and not something I wanted to do but really need to save the money. Planning to move to a different state soon and need all the money for that. I will still be supporting the studios as I do quite often go to the movies whether it be premium IMAX, GDX, Regal RPX, Cinemark XD, Dolby Cinema, PLF, or standard viewing. I love watching movies and will still continue to watch as many as I can. I have invested in a really nice quality 4K Laptop as well to be able to watch my 4K movies on the go now as well. I would love some moral support from anyone who has recently made the switch as I could use it lol. I went to a store today and browsed the movies and almost ended up adding another movie to my collection which I would have never probably watched right away as my backlog of titles I still need to see is pretty high. I think the only movies I will possibly continue buying depending on how many more they keep making is Star Wars and Marvel.

You’ll be fine. I doubt your wallet or your backlog will improve all that much but at least you dont have to worry about shelf space

Do what is right for you and do not worry what anyone else, including me, thinks about your decision. My preference is beyond obvious and I will let that speak for itself, but I do want to say that I can not think of many instances where I ever paid $34.99 for a 4K disc; I very rarely spend more than $24.99 for a single movie on the 4K disc format. I often pay $19.99 or even less. I get the blu-ray AND the digital copy, too, for that price. You're either exaggerating the prices here or you were needlessly over paying.

All the Steelbooks at Best Buy have been $34.99 and I get sucked into collecting. Also, I usually get hyped into certain movies and buy multiples which is also hurting the wallet. As someone who doesn't make close to even $25 an hour I can not afford at the moment. I will stick to buying movies I must have otherwise it will be most likely renting the movie or just enjoying it while it's in theaters. For future purchases, it will be digital.

If you buy digital from the people who bought physical copies, and are just re-selling them...your still supporting physical! Good for you. I hope your able to save up enough to reach your goal to move out of state. I’m currently working on that exact goal myself. Good luck.

Then what you were paying the premium for was the packaging, not so much the 4K format. If you enjoy steelbooks that much, digital purchases alone will never scratch that itch.

As I said before, do what is in your best interests and have no regrets about it. Discs and steel books will still be here if you ever want them; you're not making an irrevocable choice. You only need to please yourself.

For whatever it's worth... As much as I enjoy the act of collecting, driving to stores and buying physical media... aside from a handful of things here and there, there is very little that I've ever actually re watched or gotten the urge to re watch. I sometimes wonder if the act of collecting is more enjoyable/addictive than actually watching this stuff.

If you enjoy it and can afford it, does it really matter? If I'm having fun and causing no harm in the process, then the expenditure was justified.

Just sell all the bd's and use that to fund your digital collection. Just remember there are downsides to going all digital. Just cons and pros with both.

If you have any anime let me know.

I have some rare finds on BD that I don't think I could ever get rid of (no anime tho sorry) but going forward It will be all digital. Most of my friends just use streaming services such as netflix or hulu so they don't even really care if a movie takes 5 months to watch. I literally have an entire Marvel steelbook collection but what really bit the bullet for me is when they released Iron Man collection and Thor all at once. I just don't got the money for that. I've invested in a payment plan option and got myself a nice 4K laptop. Will be in monthly payments with no interest. I have a 4k TV with 7.1 surround etc but I feel like I will need my own personal on the go now that I am going digital.

Honestly the hunt for me is worth more than the actual movie. I've legit hunted more for rare finds and movies I have not even watched. The last movie I purchased and immediately sat down to watch was my favorite movie Ready Player One.

If the thrill of the hunt is what you enjoyed most, then hunting with a laptop's touchpad in search of a digital title is not going to be anywhere near as much fun. No steelbook trophy to display afterwards, either.

If you don't watch many of the discs that you buy, with their constant presence serving as a reminder, what makes you think that you will watch many of the digital copies that you buy? If it is the act of hunting and collecting that you enjoy the most, then you are sacrificing the aspect of this hobby that you like best just to save space and a few $. Kinda sounds likes a recipe for disappointment to me.

Ready Player One is a fun movie, especially in 3D. The book is even better.

I only purchase movies that have a high replay value for me. Movies I know I will watch over and over. It doesn’t make sense (to me) to buy a movie, watch once, then have it collect dust while taking up valuable shelf space.

Even if I only watch a movie once, the purchase was still worth it to me. Buying the movie and then watching it, and whatever extras there might be of interest, in the comfort of my own home AND at a lower price than what it would cost for two tickets to the theater is still a great bargain to me. I have better concessions also.

If I buy a real turkey, I can attempt to resell it, regift it, donate it, use it for skeet practice, ceremoniously burn it, or keep it as a reminder of a bad choice made. I have lost far more gambling on new restaurants than I ever have with taking a chance on a movie.

Shelf space did it for me, went Digital in 2008/09. Free upgrades to 4k was nice. iTunes are keeping movie extras live and well. 4k/HDR all the way.

I use to be exactly like you but looking up some of my non rare finds on eBay etc they are virtually worthless. They are obviously not worthless to me or you though. Collecting for resell value was never my intent. I will hold onto these movies until I die. I respect and do agree with you that it will be super hard to stop. I'm not going to be buying as many movies as I said either. If there is a movie I really want to see I will rent or go to the theaters obviously as soon as possible than if I really enjoyed it than think about owning it.

[Show spoiler]Now if someone can tell me when vinyl goes digital lol. That's one medium I don't think I'll be able to stop. The sound quality and nostalgic value keeps that going also the fact that vinyls are rather cheap for the ones I buy and don't purchase often. Small steps for me though. First movies than maybe music digital. Unsure yet.

Also didn't mean to upset anyone. Really could use some support as I've been collecting ever since my dad talked me into my first very own VHS player for my room .

I think it is pretty apparent that I seldom part with any movie that I buy. They are not my investments; they are my entertainment.

I don't think that you have upset anyone, but when you ask for comments about a decision that you made on an internet forum, you have to expect that the replies will be varied.

Again, be happy with your decision; you are doing what you deem to be best for you and that is all the validation that you need. Further, this choice, while hard for you, is rather inconsequential in that it is not irreversible. You can change your mind at any time as your situation evolves, or not, as you see fit.

You can buy only digital, or only discs (like me ), or do a mix of both. You can even forego purchases altogether and just use subscription streaming and on demand rentals from sites like Vudu. Do what you want; the rest of us will be doing what we want and we will be happy doing it. You should be, too.

I think you will be alright, like you found out you won't get much for selling your Disc Collection. Just keep the ones that are near and dear to you. I still have many Discs and Back-ups, but went Digital in 2014 and haven't looked back. You can find the Digital Codes at good prices, but they have gone up. Just make sure you can access all the Streaming Providers like Amazon Prime, FN, MA, Vudu, and a lot more to come get ready for Disney+. No I think you will be fine, Collecting Discs are a thing of the past the Future is Streaming!
